Dippy eggs?!

Please help! I can never get the damn things right. Anyone got a fool proof way of doing them?

Google Delia Smith’s instructions - fool proof and never fails

This. Perfect eggs every time. DH has soft boiled, I prefer hard boiled.

Put your egg(s) out of the fridge and put into a pan of cool/lukewarm water, put on the heat and bring to the boil. When the water starts bubbling, set a 4 minute timer (3 and a half if you want it really runny). Take out the eggs (carefully because the shells will be piping hot) and enjoy :) I get a dippy egg every time doing it this way :D

BarbaraofSeville · 15/01/2021 10:27

I rarely have boiled eggs because I only like runny yolk and can't eat solid yolk unless it is fully solid and mashed up into egg mayonnaise and it's hard to get right so I don't bother and have a fried egg instead as I feel I can control it much better.

But I would say somewhere between 3 and 4 minutes with a room temperature egg into simmering water is about right. The electric egg boilers also seem to be OK.

But with answers ranging between 1.5 and 6 minutes, it seems there's too many variables and you just have to see what works for you. It might need some note making of the results and conditions to get to the result you want.

Excellent. So MNetters cannot even agree on something as basic as "how to boil an egg"

Get the water to boiling point and put your room temperature egg (don't store in the fridge) in for 4 minutes. Just enough time to rustle up a load of hot buttered soldiers for dipping.

Well we’re all satisfied with the outcome so what does it matter?

Yes, quite. Why does there have to be a consensus?

OP can work her way through all the variations until she figures out the perfect method/timing for her tastes.

cardoon · 15/01/2021 10:53

I think what kind of hob you use makes a difference in timing.
My gas hob took less time than my induction [shrug]

Blimey, lighten up - it wasn't a criticism! Boiling an egg is often used to indicate something simple and straightforward. Clearly it isn't.

I went on FB after posting here and there is a current post in one of the travel groups I use which has descended into the usual bickering. Someone (not me!) has pointed out that people are being so argumentative that they would probably even argue about how to boil an egg.

I resisted the temptation to put a link to this thread. Grin

Ninkanink · 15/01/2021 11:28

Heh i am lightened up - so difficult to convey tone in writing!

Anyway there’s a perfectly boiled egg just waiting out there for every individual...

@TheDiceWoman1 let us know how you get on with your gadget!

UpShutTheFuck · 15/01/2021 14:28

@Ninkanink

Apologies for misinterpreting the tone

Inserts smiling egg emoji.

Marvelina · 15/01/2021 14:34

I do into boiling water for 6-7 minutes
