Dippy eggs?!

Please help! I can never get the damn things right. Anyone got a fool proof way of doing them?

Ninkanink · 14/01/2021 22:52

Guess what I’m having for breakfast tomorrow? 😋😋

TheDiceWoman1 · 14/01/2021 22:52

So many different answers 😂 I've ordered an egg timer thing you put in the water (didn't know they existed so thank you) that seemed the easiest way to solve! I always have a mix of medium and large around so I wouldn't be able to remember the timings!

I’m with OppsUpsSide - eggs in cold water and time 1.30 mins when it starts to boil. If you start with hot water the whites go rubbery and water leaks out because it’s cooked too quickly.

My nanas method never ever fails me...

Eggs into pan (doesn't matter if they are straight from the fridge or room temperature)

Fill pan with tap water so it covers the eggs 3/4 so there is 1/3 of the egg left out of the water.

Put pan on the boil. Time 3 minutes only once the water starts boiling.

lift eggs out once 3 minutes has passed and chop the tops off

Runny yolk every time - perfect for dipping!

midsomermurderess · 14/01/2021 23:09

I gently boil for 7 minutes. We all must have different expectations of 'dippy'.

Tickledtrout · 14/01/2021 23:10

Delia's method. Get water to a rolling boil. Add egg ,( non refrigerated) and continue boil ( lid off)for one minute. Take off heat, put lid on pan and time - 6 minutes for large egg, 5 medium, 4 smallish ones you get in mixed boxes.

CarolEffingBaskin · 14/01/2021 23:12

Honestly, buy the egg steamer. We got one as a wedding present and it’s literally the best present we got Grin

PurpleishDahlia · 14/01/2021 23:18

Fill a small pan with boiling water from the kettle. Drop a little vinegar or lemon in the water. This is very important as the acidity helps the egg white go hard and not desintegrate. Put your egg in a ramekin and gently submerge it in the boiling water, like you would transfer a goldfish to a bigger bowl. 3-4 minutes and done, perfect shape every time. 🐣🥚

PurpleishDahlia · 14/01/2021 23:21

Oh wair did you mean boiled with the shell?? Scratch that then 🙊🙊

Ninkanink · 15/01/2021 08:29

I like mine with the white set and most of the yolk runny with just a little bit cooked through. If I wanted the yolk fully runny I’d take the cooking time down by a minute.

Upupupintheair · 15/01/2021 08:35

Keep eggs in the fridge, and add to boiling water for 5 minutes for a large egg straight from the fridge 🙂

trixiebelden77 · 15/01/2021 08:38

@Merename

This is hilarious, there’s barely a consistent answer amongst the lot!!
Well....because they’re different size eggs, surely? Fridge or not will make a difference. Starting out with boiling water or not will make a difference.

Seems obvious rather than hilarious.

FamilyOfAliens · 15/01/2021 08:41

I’ve never heard the term “dippy eggs” before. Surely if it means an egg with a soft yolk, then that could include a fried or poached egg with a soft yolk?

So do people mean soft boiled eggs?

Ninkanink · 15/01/2021 08:43

Yes people mean soft boiled eggs. Called dippy eggs by some because you dip your toast into it.

museumum · 15/01/2021 08:46

@TheDiceWoman1

If it helps I don't keep my eggs in the fridge!

Are you guys using a pan with a lid or not?

I had the water boiling before I put them in, then put the lid on for 4 minute. Came out with a bit of watery stuff inside 🤢

Lid doesn’t matter so long as water is gently boiling (not bubbling enough to make the eggs bump about). Put in then 6min.

I call them dippy eggs because you dip the toast soldiers in them. All my family call them that

I dip my toast in my fried egg Confused
PegasusReturns · 15/01/2021 08:53

Eggs not from fridge.

Into steady boiling water.

4mins for a medium egg, another 20 seconds for large.

They’re called dippy eggs because you dip your soldier in.

FamilyOfAliens · 15/01/2021 08:54

And I take a whole soft boiled egg out of the shell and mash it up on a piece of toast Grin

OppsUpsSide · 15/01/2021 08:58

@Glenorma yes!! It’s not just me! 🙌

TheMarzipanDildo · 15/01/2021 09:00

3 minutes 20 seconds is right. The rest of you are wrong.

HappyPotato · 15/01/2021 09:12

This is so interesting, I have to do medium eggs at a gentle boil for 5-6 minutes and I'll still sometimes have runny white.
I'd have completely raw eggs at 3-4 minutes! Confused

NoProblem123 · 15/01/2021 09:24

Funny how we all knew OP wanted boiled eggs even though we can have dippy fried and dippy poached eggs too Grin

I didn’t.

I thought it was one of those cute kids’ sayings like cutted up pear Grin

Ninkanink · 15/01/2021 09:40

I say boiled eggs and soldiers. But I’ve heard lots of people call it dippy eggs.
