Dippy eggs?!

Please help! I can never get the damn things right. Anyone got a fool proof way of doing them?

I can never remember, and always have to check my ancient delia smith how to cook book. I’m not a total kitchen twat, but I must use that recipe more than almost any other. I just can’t get the timings in my head 😂

Buttercupcup · 14/01/2021 21:35

Room temperature eggs in to simmering water for 4 minutes 40 seconds for a perfect dippy yolk!

AlCalavicci · 14/01/2021 21:37

I cheat and poach mine using a silcone poach pocket thingy and dip / eat them from the pocket , no faffing about trying to get the top of either with bits of shell everywhere

Snapsnapcrocodile · 14/01/2021 21:38

@Prufrocks

I didn’t realise people kept their eggs in the fridge.

Op I set a timer for 5 minutes and put them into boiling water. No fuss.

Americans commonly keep their eggs in the fridge because their eggs are washed and that affects the membrane on the shell and therefore their shelf life. UK and EU eggs are not allowed to be washed, which is why we don’t need to keep ours refrigerated.

But to the point: I also cook mine on a low boil for five minutes.

es1988 · 14/01/2021 21:38

My late mother always popped them in the kettle...pierce the (air bubble) end of the egg, put it in the kettle. Once it comes to a boil, time for four minutes then take out. Perfect dippy eggs every time! :)

Tangledtresses · 14/01/2021 21:39

Fridge cold egg into cold water
Bring to simmer slowly not too fierce
As soon as it starts to dinner i put the toaster on
By the time the toast pops I drain and rinse eggs in cold water

Butter toast and away we go

They always turn out right

EvilPea · 14/01/2021 21:39

I got a colour change egg thing from poundland.
Game changer. Never fails

JazzyGeoff · 14/01/2021 21:42

Just off boiling water (ie from a kettle) into a pan, 4 minutes.

Mine are never kept in the fridge though, most of the time they are not long out of the hen as we keep them.

Gunpowder · 14/01/2021 21:42

I always keep eggs in the fridge / even though you don’t have to - so they stay fresher for longer. I’ve used them in cakes way past the stamped date.

I do my dippy eggs straight from the fridge into just boiling water (but I lower them in with a spoon) for 5 mins. If they aren’t completely set I put the top back on and let them rest for an extra couple of minutes.

triceratops12 · 14/01/2021 21:42

Do them in the kettle!

BertieBotts · 14/01/2021 21:44

5 minutes, room temperature, boiling water, lid off.

The colour changing thing works really well as well.

NoParticularPattern · 14/01/2021 21:44

A minute and 30 seconds?! The whole thing would be dippy at that never mind just the yolk! For what it’s worth I do mine (not from fridge) into boiling water for 3.5 mins but I do like them a little snotty! I go to 4 mins for the toddler who doesn’t.

Ninkanink · 14/01/2021 21:44

For large eggs I bring the water to boil, add eggs, turn the heat down a little so the eggs simmer rather than furiously boiling, then cook for 6 minutes. Make the toast in the meantime, leave it to cool a bit then spread with butter, sprinkle with salt and cut into soldiers. When 6 minutes is up the eggs go into cold water for one minute, then cut the tops off and eat straightaway.

5 minutes for medium eggs, 4 for small.

BluTangClan · 14/01/2021 21:46

From the fridge into boiling water for 5.5 - 6 mins. Pierce the rounded end before you put them in.

We only keep eggs in the fridge as it's a convenient place to keep them.

ParadiseLaundry · 14/01/2021 21:47

I'm amazed that everyone dies them differently!

Take out of fridge put egg into pan with cold water.

Bring to the boil, then turn down to a simmer for 3mins. Always perfect!

LittleBrownBaby · 14/01/2021 21:50

4 mins 30 secs never fails

Inaseagull · 14/01/2021 22:00

If you ever want to peel boiled eggs, lower them into the boiling water instead of boiling from cold. Shell will come off clean.

Changemaname1 · 14/01/2021 22:01

So many varying times !

Op I can never get them perfect either

SalemsPot22 · 14/01/2021 22:04

Why do people put them in the fridge?

Into boiling water for 5 minutes.

SelfMadeFantasist · 14/01/2021 22:04

Out of fridge and into small pan of cold water. Bring to boil, invert egg timer (the kind with sand in) and plunge into cold water when the sand has all run down. (Medium eggs - large ones take a few seconds more)

Straight from the fridge for 1:30? They can’t be cooked

I know, it’s weird. But if I do 3 mins they’re hard boiled. I have never met anyone else who does the same timing as me. Maybe I take to long to cut the tops off? 🤷🏻‍♀️

ktp100 · 14/01/2021 22:25

I keep mine out of the fridge, always large eggs and into simmering water 5.5 mins.

Ocassionally a teeny bit of watery white but that's always going to happen if an egg is a bit bigger.

Mum2jenny · 14/01/2021 22:29

Place into boiling water for 3 minutes for a normal egg. It’s fairly simple but one you try it you can then decide if you prefer it more or less cooked and adjust the cooking time.

NoProblem123 · 14/01/2021 22:41

This is so funny - I do cupboard warm large eggs for 6 mins but I like mine half dippy half firm but no squishy bit, and this works every time.
No lid, small pan, eggs in first, boiled water in, gentle rolling boil.
