Recommend me a witchy magic-y book?

Just finished Ninth House (Leigh Bardugo). I'm not usually into sci fi and fantasy but it's been good escapism and now I'm wondering about other books I might like. I like magic, spells, witchy stuff set in the normal universe I guess. I enjoyed Neil Gaiman too. No idea where to go next though! I looked at A Discovery of Witches but the reviews on Amazon were a bit rubbish. Would love to be pushed in the right direction.

I read some by Nora Roberts that I really enjoyed, her Three Sisters Island Trilogy.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 14/01/2021 20:49

Ben Aaronovitch

SuddenArborealStop · 14/01/2021 20:53

I like Deborah gearys modern witch series, if you want something light.
Practical magics good too.

I found Ben aaronovitch good for the first couple of books but they fell off I think.

I loved The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane by Katherine Howe, there's also a sequel called The Daughters of Temperance Hobbs which was good too

Marvelina · 14/01/2021 21:03

I'm adding all of these to my basket!

I enjoyed the Alex Craft series by Kalayna Price, Lizzie Grace series by Keri Arthur and the Witchcraft Mysteries by Juliet Blackwell. I am very into my escapism witchcraft fiction.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 14/01/2021 21:07

I love, love, love the Magic Bites books by Ilona Andrews. Immensely interesting. Well researched into mythology and an interesting new take on various creatures (vampires and shapeshifters but don't let that put you off if you don't usually enjoy reading those). Set in a 'post-shift' Atlanta where the world is suffused in magic whic comes in waves and disappears from time to time too. Just excellent.

Xiaoxiong · 14/01/2021 21:07

Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell
The Familiars
The ladies of grace adieu
The night circus

And finally, the witch books from Terry pratchett's discworld, and the Tiffany aching books too! Those are my favourite witches Grin

AzaleaMania · 14/01/2021 21:09

Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen. It's delicious and gorgeous. Most of her books have a magical element, set in reality. They're perfect escapism to lovely worlds usually involving yummy sounding foods!!

FrogsSpawnofSanta · 14/01/2021 21:11

I forgot about Ilona Andrews, their Edge series and innkeeper books are good too though not strictly witchcraft.

I think I will be adding a lot to my reading list with this thread too.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 14/01/2021 21:14

Oh yes, I also really enjoy the innkeeper series. Again a completely different take on placing magic into the real world.

alltheadrenalin · 14/01/2021 21:26

Circe Madeline Miller

Ihatemyseleffordoingthis · 14/01/2021 21:27

the Familiars is a lot of fun

I also loved, the Daylight Gate by Jeanette Winterson, but it is short and bit more literary iyswim

Rumdiddly · 14/01/2021 21:31

Another vite for the familiars.

Definitelynotlazy · 14/01/2021 21:35

A Discovery of Witches is my absolute favourite. I adored it. Supernatural, witchcraft, vampires, romance, history...oh my word, I was lost in another world. Beautiful.

Definitelynotlazy · 14/01/2021 21:36

Though I believe the TV series isn't quite so good!

Jfw82 · 14/01/2021 21:42

Another ilona andrews fan here. (And for those who already read I assume you know a new book released just this week spin off from Kate Daniels)

Kelley Armstrong otherworld series though not just witchy start with werewolves. Also witches, sorcerers, necromancers etc

I do love discovery of witches trilogy (not convinced by tv adaptation)

Nora Roberts - Donovan legacy quartet, cousins o'dwyer trilogy, chronicles of the one trilogy. All enjoyable too

beccy11 · 14/01/2021 21:45

The Immortal series Alyson Noel
Does it have to be witch themed or are you open to paranormal in general?
If you're open to paranormal
Darynda Jones- Charlie Davison series can't really explain it but loved them
Rachel Caine-Morgansville Vampire series

If you want any more paranormal suggestions let me know I have many 😆

TheCap · 14/01/2021 21:46

I thought The Night Circus was beautiful

DrMadelineMaxwell · 14/01/2021 22:15

@Jfw82 Yes! I'm about halfway in and the spin off book is definitely not a disappointment.

WithASpider · 14/01/2021 22:17

I thoroughly enjoyed the Discovery of Witches trilogy too, not enamoured of the series though. I can recommend Jim Butcher, either the Dresden Files series or the Furies series. Brilliant books.

Figmentofimagination · 14/01/2021 22:19

I love Nora Roberts. She has a few different magical/witchcraft series. I think one was set in Ireland.

Nacreous · 14/01/2021 22:19

The night circus and the Rivers of London books - the first couple slightly irritated me but after that I really enjoyed them.

Will be taking other recommendations from this thread!

DrMadelineMaxwell · 14/01/2021 22:20

I haven't read it, but The Familiars is 99p on Amazon kindle.
