First world problem - present buying

Last time I was in my local supermarket I saw a toy my ds would love for his birthday.
His birthday is next week. He will be 5.

I am shopping today and would be the last time before ds birthday. Ds will be with me.

Would you get the toy even though he will see it?

Usually his presents would be all surprises.

Also I cannot order it online as it's 4 times the price!

Will he be sitting in the trolley seat? Any chance you can distract him with a snack or something and then just slip it into the back of the trolley under other bits and pieces?
Same at checkout - lots of snacks and distractions might work?

I would, I'd say it was for nephew or other child that may like it for their birthday.

How sensible is he? Could you, as you are about to leave, suddenly remember you forgot something fairly big (washing powder maybe?), and ask him to stay by the trolley - maybe next to the customer service desk - while you pop back and buy it?

Tell him a friend has asked you to buy it as they can't get to the supermarket.
