How do storage facilities work?

Hello. Trying to devise and propose a way of getting my ex's personal stuff back to him.I wanted either him to book a storage facility and send me the key, or I book it for a month and then give him the key to either take the stuff or take on the contract to continue storing it. I really don't want to have any contact with him at all.

Any ideas on how it would work? Can someone who is not the contract owner go into the facility? Has anyone done this method of transfer?

When I had one, you got a key fob with a sensor on for the huge metal garage doors into the facility and supplied your own lock to lock your unit. You could go in/out anytime.
If you do this, let him book it not you. That way it's his responsibility for the contract.

Could you not just give his stuff to a friend or family member for him to then collect from?

If you can get the stuff to a storage place just ask for an address to drop it to by x date or your binning it
Storage option sounds unnecessarily completed

Would it not be cheaper to have it couriered time him. Storage units are a monthly contract.

It's a lot of stuff and he lives in a flat share ( I think) so he'd need to get storage anyway. I thought it would be the most efficient way of doing it, to cut down on the moaning, and I can't rely on him to not play silly buggers and not answer the door or something.
