Sitting here waiting for the man to repair my heating and I thought I’d start a new book. It’s an out of print one from the 1970s that I’d been searching for ages. I picked it up and flipped through to find a rather surprising bookmark. I’ll post it a bit later just to keep you all guessing. 😀

I wonder though, have you ever flipped through a book and found something odd, surprising, intriguing or unexpected? I would love to hear about it. 🙂

I used to work in a library.

A fried egg

A used condom

It still gives me nightmares.

Oooh, a denouement!

EsmesRedPetticoat · 12/01/2021 16:37

I found an advert for an asbestos tea towel in a second hand book a few years ago. In fact we still have it around somewhere!

I've never found an odd bookmark in a library book. However I have left a rather large cheque in one Shock.

I was going to pay for a holiday and needed to move enough money into a different account, several thousand pounds. Couldn't think where I had put it but thankfully (a) it was a popular library book and (b) the person who picked it up and borrowed it was honest and contacted the library.

I later went to visit them and thanked them profusely, making a donation to the charity of their choice (they would not accept a cash 'thank you'). Phew!

A flower now neatly pressed @draughtycatflap

I recall pressing flowers in books many years ago so a possibility. I might have easily passed a book on with a flower inside.

Some copies of Farenheit 451 were bound in asbestos. Not a clever idea. www.whitmorerarebooks.com/pages/books/1169/ray-bradbury/fahrenheit-451-asbestos-binding?soldItem=true

I found a postcard in a charity shop book advertising the Sunset Cafe Taverna in Kastanida (Greece). There's a map on the back showing how to find it. My husband is still using it as a bookmark (I don't do bookmarks, I just remember the page I'm on) The Taverna looks lovely!

Interested again.

biddybird · 12/01/2021 16:49

@bravotango Where were you flying to/from when you found the 4-leaf clover?

@SisterAgatha

I love these weird book stories. Makes me think of that Anthony Hopkins one where he found a random book on the tube.

In 1974, Anthony Hopkins acted in a film called "The Girl From Petrovka," which was adapted from a novel. Hopkins wanted to read a copy, so he set out to several bookstores to find one. He was unable to find a copy, and on the way home via train, he spotted a book sitting on a nearby bench. The book happened to be a heavily annotated copy of "The Girl From Petrovka." Later on while filming the movie, Hopkins met the book's author, George Feifer. Feifer mentioned that he had lent his own heavily-annotated copy of the book to a friend who later misplaced it. Hopkins then showed Feifer the book he had found and Feifer recognized his own annotations, proving that Hopkins' copy was Feifer's lost book.

I love this story!!! Ran in to read it to my husband right away.

I hope this isn't going to be a "what's in the safe" thread...

I’m in the drawing room. Where are you @draughtycatflap 😂

Or not as the case may be…

“Yeah! Follow me, you will see a part 2.” 20 years later and there is still no part 2.

A love letter inside a book I bought from a charity shop ❤️❤️
The letter was dated 1956, it was so sweet. I tried to trace the owner through local Facebook pages, but never managed to reunite it with anyone. I’ve kept it because it seems disrespectful to throw it away.

draughtycatflap · 12/01/2021 17:02

Certainly not!

Sorry about the delay. I’m not holding out on you guys. I was disinfecting the utility area and feeding the cat.

I have heat! Yay! Thanks to all my sleuths for helping me pass a slightly nerve wracking afternoon. Will he fix it? Will I need a new boiler? Will he give me you know what!

Just give me a chance to take a pic and upload it.
🙂

Does it have a full name and/or address on it? You might be able to trace it through that.

NOTANUM · 12/01/2021 17:04

You're not the mumsnetter who found the used sanitary towel in a library book, are you?

Though PP's story of finding a used condom is just as bad!

grassisjeweled · 12/01/2021 17:05

Come on then op, let's be having you.

viques · 12/01/2021 17:08

@billybagpuss

I found an invite to the opening of the Severn bridge in a second hand book once, I still have it.
I found an invitation to a premiere London showing of Gone With the Wind. I have a feeling I still have it, just have to remember which book it’s in...........

I wonder if our original owners spent frantic hours searching for their invitations, only to give up and sit at home in their party finery imagining the fun more careful invitees were having.
