Mum’s 80th birthday.

It’s my Mum’s 80th birthday soon. I haven’t seen my parents for a year now. We live the other end of the country to them and can only visit in school holidays and of course our Easter visit was cancelled. So sad.

Anyhow, what do I get her?! I’ve not much money so it can’t be a big thing. Maybe around £50?

I’ve a big list of things I can’t get... no chocolate, cheese, coffee, sweets, socks. Random I know but....

Any ideas of things I could send by post would be appreciated.

I bought her cashmere gloves and scarf previously. She wears a special necklace and won’t wear anything else. The photo idea might work.

Yes, she would love a bunch of flowers. Something cheery, so I’ll look at big fat peony’s!

M&S deliver birthday cakes complete with a box of candles, I think some options include a little balloon. If your budget is £50 you would also have enough money left over for a little gift or flowers. A photobook is also a nice idea.

My cousin recently organised a compilation of video messages from the whole family. We all recorded a birthday greeting on our phones and sent them on WhatsApp and he magically cut and pasted them all together, presumably iPhones are good at that sort of thing. It went down really well.

Or you can get digital photo Frames that display a slideshow, pre-load it with all the family pics.

Anything “on that internet” is a no go . During the reprieve from lockdowns we got a neighbour to go into theirs and set up a computer so we could Zoom. Oh my, the stress!
Ditto the digital photo frame we got her!
I think cake and flowers are the way and then promise her that when it’s safe we will come and visit and do lunch!

Any books she might like or cd recordings of books?. Is there a program she likes to watch or radio show who might mention her with a special message from the family.?

My mum loved a helium balloon. Arrived in a massive box, floated out when opened and is still bobbng around in the living room.

Flowers and cake ordered from M&S. The flowers look beautiful, so cheery. The cake is rainbow and comes with candles so hopefully that is fun and cheery too. We need a bit of that!
The helium ballon is a brilliant idea, I’ll look into that.
It’s inspired to think about what radio programme she listens to and try and get a song and shout out added. She’s an avid listener to their local (BBC?) radio station. I shall liaise with my dad!
