My teen can't use the chat function at all in any lessons. School said oh she must be on mute for that lesson. Which is not the problem as it's all lessons.
She used to be able to but can't now. She couldn't get on teams at all last week!
Not fun when I'm a technophobe. Can anyone help please?

Is the chat screen showing at side of her screen

lucysmam · 11/01/2021 18:51

We had this problem a while ago but it seems to have fixed itself -is it maybe in need of an update?

mogloveseggs · 11/01/2021 18:56

@lazylockdowner no it doesn't

@lucysmam she's having to use the tablet I ordered for Ds as teams won't work on her phone or the computer. So I guess it's up to date as it's newly downloaded?

The chat function on Teams is separate to the live meetings which have their own meeting chat that everyone can see and type in. Being on mute in that is just the same as muting yourself on zoom or any call and she should have control of that.
Unless the lesson is being delivered as a live event rather than a meeting? That's one way - we only use it for assemblies - the students are passive viewers. Lessons should be Teams meetings. The chat function can be disabled by the administrator - which schools may have done for certain users or groups of users if it's been misused.

mogloveseggs · 11/01/2021 19:03

It's live meeting chat. She can't ask any questions or anything. But everyone else in the lessons can?

It might be due to the tablet.

littlemisslozza · 11/01/2021 19:07

When she joins and the screen comes up with the settings before you click join, does she select the top option of 'join with computer audio'? My son had an experience where he couldn't do anything, there no mute button etc, and he had chosen a different option in the pop up box before he joined. Left the meeting and rejoined on computer audio and all was normal again.

mogloveseggs · 11/01/2021 19:09

@MrsHamlet oh please don't say that! Sad

@littlemisslozza thanks I'll ask her to check that in the morning.

It's so bloody annoying. She's not motivated at all and stuff like this sets her nerves off.

Some versions now have the chat etc at the top right of the screen - it used to be found by moving your cursor over the screen.
Does that help?

mogloveseggs · 11/01/2021 19:22

I've just had a look and can't find specific chat. I'm going to ring school back tomorrow if she can't do it and ask for an it bod to ring me.

Sorry Mog I might be wrong but one of my year 12 had a similar problem today.
We have a dedicated teams help email address at school - hopefully you do too

grassisjeweled · 11/01/2021 20:50

The teacher probably set it that way. Sick of kids asking questions.

You cannot activate chat as the user, only as an organiser.

Not if the others can see it, they haven't.

Does this help

FortunaMajor · 11/01/2021 21:01

Once the video is up and running, touch the screen once, this should bring up the options to change speaker and video options etc.

modgepodge · 11/01/2021 21:02

The school will have some form of IT support who will be able to help I’m sure. We’ve had kids with similar issues, we’ve raised it with our IT support and they’ve helped sort it. Has she for a form tutor she can email specifically askinf if there’s someone she can contact for help?

mogloveseggs · 11/01/2021 21:08

Thanks all. I've emailed school and will follow it up with a phonecall if I don't hear back by dinner. It's literally only when a video call is live, she can access it before and after.
Fingers crossed they have an answer as we've tried every device in the house!
