Buying a puppy.

Sort of.

Been looking for a puppy for a while,
About 18 months now.... wanted a cockapoo, but after reading about the puppy farms I’ve decided against that, looked at other breeds and got some nice advice on here.

So anyway to cut a long story short.. I’m would now like to consider a re homer and look
at rehoming a puppy (under one)

Well it’s a mine field. Nowhere seems to consider children under 8 or 10 in some cases. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Don’t want an older dog, and not keen on rehoming dogs from abroad.

Have you looked at breed specific rescues? I think sometimes they are a bit more lenient if there are children in the family.

Smaller, independent rescues are less restrictive in their rules about children and working hours and are more likely to be flexible.

Otherwise a private rehome (as lots of people will shortly be getting fed up of their covid/Xmas puppies and be dumping them on Pre loved) although then obviously there's no support or honesty on health background.

I understand the desire to get a younger dog, but one thing to call out is that dogs 'under one' are likely to be a few months old - i.e. right smack bang in adolescence and, therefore, at their most challenging, in terms of behaviour and training.

A 2 year old dog would be easier and their temperament is also likely to be better understood. Behaviours seen (or not seen) at a few months old may well disappear or emerge by the time the dog is an adult.

That's not true. Look on fb, tons of rescues from abroad are rehoming. I have two children, cats, renting and still not been refused. Home checks pending but we decided to postpone until the mad demand for dogs dies down/we have our own house.

Thanks, can you suggest any uk sites. I can find lots of rescues from abroad, But not many Uk ones.

The only rescue I have seen that regularly advertises rescue puppies is Many Tears in West Wales. They do not have a blanket ban on rehoming to families with children. The only problem of course is the issue of travel. It would be against regulations to travel into Wales to collect a pup although you could be lucky and the mum could be in foster care near you.

We ended up with a 2yo greyhound from a rescue as nowhere would let us have a dog with a primary aged child.
Have a look at the greyhound trust. They are amazing dogs and the easiest to keep by far. No shedding, little barking, 1-2 walks a day if they can be arsed

Border collie cross?

Some kind of staffie? But with bigger ears :D

I'd say that picture is some sort of Border Collie/Spaniel/Terrier cross? Head's too narrow for Staffie, more like Jack Russell, maybe?

We contacted the local rspca directly. We both work full time but we submitted a detailed essay on how the dog would be cared for while we work, including references and contact details so they could check, and we were accepted for a puppy. The puppy litter never went onto their website so I assume they have a list of people like us who made direct contact. It's worth contacting them. They will have "family dog" sent to them for rehoming too.

Manytears takes a lot of ex breeding dogs from nearby puppy farms which are legal in Wales. You might find dogs which need toilet training, you definitely will find young dogs. Ethically, it strikes me as a bit 🤔

Contact your local dog warden, they often have litters they can't get into rehoming facilities. We had our first family dog through the dog warden as the children were little and rescue wouldn't consider us.

I suspect you will struggle at the moment.

Due to lockdown, lots of rescues aren't doing home checks so if you've not already been approved, you may find they won't even consider you. If you have young children, that narrows down your options even further.

Do you have a secure garden? How long are you out of the home each day? Do you have other animals like cats or small furries? How old are your DC?

Have you tried smaller local rescues, or breed-specific ones?

@Freddiefox Looks similar ear and facial shape to my Patterdale/Jack Russell cross!

@vanillandhoney rspca did my home check remote via video. I had to do a detailed video walk around the garden to show it was secure. They were very on it.. noticed a tiny 4 inch gap between two fence panels which I hadn't even thought of, which I had to ensure was blocked up before they'd approve me. I'm glad they did because once I got him I realised the wriggled little thing would definitely have found that gap!

I'm impressed! All our (independent) local rescues have stopped doing home checks and are only taking applications from people who were approved for re-homing prior to the March lockdown.

I suppose it's area dependent and depends a lot on staffing levels, location, the number of dogs etc.

It's a tricky one when you have young kids, I can see where rescue places are coming from.
This is why we rehomed our 2 pups from a BulgarianBulgarian rescue. They were born at the rescue as mum was dumped there pregnant.
The rescue were very thorough with checks.
My friend wanted to rehome a particular dog she fell in love with from the same rescue so applied but the rescue wouldn't allow this particular dog to be rehomed with her as she had 2 young children and the dog wasnt suitable.
I felt they were right to do this and respected their decision.

I think (rightly) many rescues are very wary of re-homing dogs and puppies just now. Particularly ones that have had a shit start in life and been dumped as young dogs.

Whether this is true for your family or not there have been FAR too many people that decided to get a puppy in lockdown and have since dumped them. The timing of your decision to approach places now (just as second lockdown begins) and ask about getting a puppy will worry them, I imagine.

I'm not suggesting that you haven't thought this through, OP - but you can see why you might struggle at the moment.
