Houses with spiral staircases

I do a lot of idly browsing houses on Rightmove, and have seen several that are very lovely but only have spiral staircases - that would be an absolute no-no for me unless it was practical and affordable to replace it! I suppose some of them are wide enough so that getting furniture up and down wouldn't be too difficult, but they always look a bit scary to me (DP and I are old-ish). Would you be put off?

I love ours. It was probably installed in the 1970s and is really sturdy, with thick wide stair treads.

We also have a hatch in the dining room ceiling, for getting large pieces furniture through.

Kids are fascinated by it, so are cats.

I can run up and down our stairs with no problem, it's just a matter of getting used to them. I feel safer on them than I would on normal stairs now (we've lived here a long time!).

I would never polish the treads(that would be lethal!), they are just wiped down with a bit of wood soap.

I had to have a hip replacement a couple of years ago and I found getting up and down our spiral staircase was easier than the ordinary stairs at the hospital.

Can be an issue for fire safety when getting a mortgage

We had one in our last apartment. Going up and down was fine. Plenty of hand holds. We could get quite large pieces of furniture up there. However we found heat just shot up there. In the end we left it but in truth , it wasn't too bad.

All very interesting! I think for me, it's the climbing up and down on a bend that feels more dangerous. Probably a balance issue.
