How to make DH's birthday special during lockdown?

Hey MN!

It's DH's birthday in a fortnight and I just can't think how to make the day special.

Normally, we'd go to the theatre and out to dinner, but obvs, that's off the table this year. So what to do instead?

I've got him a lovely gift but I just worry that it'll be like every other night after he's received his gift. What have you done for your partner's birthdays?

All suggestions welcome Confused.

Same situation here, and I have no idea what to buy him for a gift, either!

I imagine it'll just be a takeaway and some beer, here.

Leeds2 · 10/01/2021 21:19

Board game evening, if he would like that.

I think you can buy wine/whisky/chocolate tasting sets online, which might be fun.

Same. As if a January birthday were not tricky at the best of times!

Following as DH is 40 in March, and I'm stumped how I can make it special if we're still in lockdown.

I like the idea of a tasting set. Thank you.

What about ordering a gourmet meal delivery where they supply all the prepared food and you cook and present it? Quite a lot of high end restaurants do this now, we've had a few from different restaurants and they've been a real treat!

CherryRoulade · 10/01/2021 23:06

I had a really nice birthday treat this year. Possibly the nicest ever.
My children co-ordinated friends and family to film happy birthday wishes. Some were funny, some were cheese, some were from overseas, one was sung, some held up letters and others did a drunken ramble. Some people I hadn’t seen in a good while. I was shown it with breakfast in bed. Really thoughtful and in places very witty; definitely special.

I would have normally taken dh put for afternoon tea for his birthday but since that isn't possible will make it at home instead. I will also cook him a special meal and probably just watch a film and do some dancing with the kids.

You could either cook a special meal or get it delivered.

Dp turned 50 recently. We hired a hot tub for a week. Highly recommend abd only just over £200

weechops · 10/01/2021 23:16

Dh turns 40 next month. I’ve booked a hot tub package which comes with lights, speaker, bar gantry. Also booked an afternoon tea to be delivered and I’m looking at restaurant deliveries for dinner. Not sure what else yet but I want to make it as special as I can. Maybe do some sort of theme night and get all the kids involved

We did this - although from a local caterer offering a 3 course meal in a box rather than a restaurant, but same idea
ChristmasSexyTime · 11/01/2021 18:44

Hi all! Great suggestions, I love the idea of getting a caterer to do something a bit different. And the hot tub idea sounds divine.

I've also found out that Virgin and Airbnb do online experiences. You can book live magic shows, murder mystery evenings, cookery classes etc. I've booked a Harry Potter tour and Quiz for DH. news.airbnb.com/en-uk/enjoy-the-magic-of-airbnb-experiences-from-the-comfort-of-your-home/

Might not be a trip to the theatre but should be a laugh.

Someone I know set up different style pub games in different rooms for a birthday recently which was fun.

BrilliantBetty · 11/01/2021 19:21

DH's 31st coming up.

We'll get 'dressed up' in the evening. Or out of our comfies, anyway. Restaurant food delivery (his favourite Thai), I have ordered a beautiful cake and have some sparklers etc at the ready.

I have tried to arrange some video calls with family and a group Zoom with friends. He's not usually that keen, but since it's a bday.

I've compiled a little video of pictures and short clips from previous holidays that I hope will be fun to watch.

Then the disco lights go on and we'll have a dance in the living room!

All a bit lockdown but that's just how it is this year.

TheMawisbraw · 11/01/2021 19:36

My sons 18th is coming up has anyone tried the zoom murder mystery’s was thinking about doing this with the extended family and or the online escape rooms for him to do with friends ( sorry if I’ve hijacked, new to mn)

MrsJonesAndMe · 11/01/2021 19:54

We always do a home made cake, this year we also ordered food from a restaurant he's wanted to try but hadn't got round to.

ChristmasSexyTime · 11/01/2021 22:51

I looked at those @TheMawisbraw I'd be interested to know how people got on with them too if anybody's done them.

DP had an early lockdown birthday last year and I’m now planning for a second one Confused

In the afternoon we did a family zoom quiz based on him and the year he was born and incorporated a birthday cake bake off so he had to virtually blow the candles out for all 5 cakes made for him. It was really lovely as we all sat eating cake together and had a giggle. Whilst he finished up on the call I turned the living room into a Harry Potter movie theatre where he had to present a ticket gifted to him in the morning.

This year I’m hoping to do a Viking themed day (horned hats mandatory!) with a Viking themed feast and silly kids games to entertain us.
