My child hand-stands 500 times a day.

At least...
It's driving me absolutely potty. I'm talking to her feet more than I am her face.
Just repetitive one after another after another handstand.
She does it so much that she's got a six pack starting. She is 6 years old.
Does anyone else have this problem?
Before anyone asks she does do gymnastic classes!
She does it in the lounge, on the bed, the sofa, in the garden, out on walks. Absolutely everywhere and it is very very irritating!

This was me. My poor DM. I would cartwheel my way through the house, crab walk up the stairs (got a bollocking for that one) and watch TVs doing a handstand.

Anyway happy to report that is not how I love my day to day life now. I remember my DM buying me a gymnast mat and telling me I could only practice on there as it was safer. I did gymnastics too and was obsessed for a little while, will die down soon.

ClinkyMonkey · 10/01/2021 23:03

My 8yo DS does headstands all day. On the sofa. On my bed. In the middle of the floor. He now has washboard abs, unlike during the first lockdown, when he had a little belly starting to form. I think he's just bored! It's quite cute, but also annoying having his legs waving about dangerously close to my face.

Turquoisesea · 10/01/2021 23:14

My DD went through a phase about 7 of cartwheeling everywhere. She did grow out of it but I remember one particularly embarrassing incident when she randomly did it going into Sainsbury’s and nearly kicked a woman in the face! I was mortified and apologised profusely!

My children boomerang from one end if the sofa to the other for best part of the day. Its exhausting to watch Grin.
It's the constant mum watch this, so you come through from kitchen, look interested then back to kitchen to finish what you're doing then you hear it again and again and watch it over and over.

2fallsagain · 10/01/2021 23:25

Yep. Aged 10 and constantly hand standing, walkover-ing and cartwheeling. Oh and stretching. Her abs are impressive!

jellybe · 10/01/2021 23:30

My DD is like this with cartwheels. She's now to big to do them in the house with out destroying things (which she only realised once she hit a wall) but as soon as she is out side and there is a patch of clear grass she goes over and over and over. It used to send me crazy but now it just impresses me that even with the start of gangly teenage limbs she can still do them.

Barton10 · 10/01/2021 23:33

I did that when I was her age and forward rolls round the house constantly. Why walk across a roll when you can find a better way to do it!

LizDiz · 10/01/2021 23:42

@2fallsagain Shock that's impressive!

bubblebubblebubbletrouble · 10/01/2021 23:49

Yep dd2 is 6 and has spent most of the weekend upside down. Mostly - handstand and fall on to the sofa and then kick over backwards.
I marginally prefer marking handstands to counting hula hoop rotations tbh

AlwaysLatte · 11/01/2021 00:03

Love it! My two boys are needing to be peeled off the sofa regularly so I think that's fantastic.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 11/01/2021 00:08

If she's kicking people in the face I would be telling her to go do it in a room with no one around.

WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo · 11/01/2021 00:09

I think I spent 99% of my life upside down at that age ........I've got a lovely scar on my head from where I missjudged a headstand on the sofa, landed behind it and crashed into a radiator 😂😂😂

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 11/01/2021 00:10

My 7 year old wants his mattress down on the living room floor all day every day to do wrestling moves and flips. Great that he's keeping active, but I've had to tell him I'm not watching every move anymore, so I'll watch a new one that he has learned but not the same ones over and over again. Unfortunately they all look exactly the same 🙄

mammmamia · 11/01/2021 00:14

My DD10 is exactly like this too 🤦🏻‍♀️ It’s been going on for YEARS Grin
She has stopped almost kicking people in the face but she’s constantly upside down or in splits or trying to do somersaults on my bed. Really hope her gymnastics club is allowed to open soon.
She does it all over the house and has nearly knocked a tooth out on the kitchen floor once.
I have bought her a couple of different gym mats to try and keep her safe.

Loncan · 11/01/2021 00:14

This was me as a child (and also me now, as a mid-30 year old, because I never grew out of the gymnastics phase lol)

mammmamia · 11/01/2021 00:15

Oh yes and now she’s constantly trying to copy tiktok moves and getting me to film her. All the bloody time.

Ribidibidibidoobahday · 11/01/2021 00:30

Annoying to constantly watch but cool. Can she do the t-shirt challenge?

My daughter has just broken her arm, so definitely fewer handstands this lockdown for us.

Cool

I love this thread. It was me over 50 odd years ago. I still get the urge and have been known to do a few cartwheels in the garden quite recently with my DGDs! Only last week I was doing 'teddy rolls' around the lounge with them Grin As a primary teacher I often impressed my class with a few cartwheels across the hall! Enjoy while you can @jojoandgrangran

SnappedAndFartedInMaui · 11/01/2021 04:14

I enjoyed handstands and used to try walking on my hands but I never could cartwheel. I feel a bit jealous of anyone who can, to be honest.

JustAnotherUserinParadise · 11/01/2021 04:40

@Grenlei

I think this is rather lovely - my friends DD was very like this at similar age, cartwheeling up and down the lounge non stop (or the garden in good weather). She was literally never still, always doing some sort of acrobatics. Tbh I'd rather that than another friends DD who was constantly singing. Now that was irritating!
Haha I was the constantly-singing child! My mum said she could tell if I was really ill because that's the only time I stopped! Sorry to say I'm now 30 and still do it!
Amarilike · 11/01/2021 07:05

@Notverygrownup

I'd forgotten the handstand gene. It's clearly a deeply seated evolutionary phase for girls to know how to be upside down. Goodness knows why!

Remember, this too will pass . . .

Ha ha yeah this ^

DD spent a lot of time upside down around age 7. She wasn’t as bad as my goddaughter though who was often in the crab position Grin

It’s definitely a phase for some OP but it does pass. Although it’s bloody irritating and getting kicked in the face isn’t fun.

Skipsurvey · 11/01/2021 07:06

my dd did that at that age, along the street, in the hospital corridor.

whatswithtodaytoday · 11/01/2021 07:09

I went through a phase of doing this when I was about six Grin It must be a developmental thing, gaining control over your body?

I wish I could still do them now! I attempted a cartwheel last summer and crumpled Confused

Icanseegreenshoots · 11/01/2021 07:30

Be glad she is moving. I remember that stage well! Enjoy it, she will soon be a teen lying in bed for most of the morning Grin
