At least...
It's driving me absolutely potty. I'm talking to her feet more than I am her face.
Just repetitive one after another after another handstand.
She does it so much that she's got a six pack starting. She is 6 years old.
Does anyone else have this problem?
Before anyone asks she does do gymnastic classes!
She does it in the lounge, on the bed, the sofa, in the garden, out on walks. Absolutely everywhere and it is very very irritating!

I used to handstand against the wall of my bedroom for hours at a time. I would be bright red and dizzy and then come down to get my blood flowing normally before chucking myself back up. My mum ended up sticking a picture up on the wall to cover the marks where my feet would constantly be as she was sick to death of cleaning it off the wall Grin

I would read books and watch tv while I did it and I have no fucking idea what was so addictive. I'd probably be sick if I even attempted a handstand now.

I remember it snowing one winter and I went out the entire day cartwheeling. My hands were cold until the next day and I remember crying because my parents wouldn't give me a hot water bottle or let me stick my hands on the radiators because my hands were red raw and they said I wouldn't be able to tell if they were burning ShockGrin

Let her enjoy it!!

I used to be like this too. Now all I have is my memories!!

Find some gymnasts online. Plenty for teaching session, let her learn walk overs, crabs, different balances etc.

Set some rules such as making sure the space is clear & the little ones are nowhere near her etc.

Rshard · 10/01/2021 18:10

This was my dd, I bought her a ‘this is my handstand t-shirt’ t-shirt - the letters are printed upside down so only read right when she was doing a handstand 😂

My daughter used to do this all the time when she was a young girl, she is an adult now.. Inside the house and on the lawns etc. She used to love gymnastics, but never went to any classes at all. She seemed to be always upside down. I had a very long kitchen at the time, and she could do a handstand, and walk the entire length of the kitchen on her hands, and then suddenly flip over and walk the whole way back in the crab position, all while I was making our dinner at the worktops..

I am an oldie now, but remember when I was about 6 and onwards, in the 50's era, my friends in the street where I lived, all used to come round to my house, and we would all be doing handstands ,all in a row,up against the brick walls of the house, all with our dresses tucked up in our big knickers. !

thirdfiddle · 10/01/2021 18:13

In normal times the obsessive ones get picked up into progressively more serious squads at this sort of age - be glad you're at home not sitting in gym centre for hours on end? Perhaps she could sometimes practice bridges or splits instead, less dangerous to furniture?
Pretty cool to have those skills at 6 I think (from someone who never mastered them).

ReallySpicyCurry · 10/01/2021 18:16

At least she can execute them properly. I had one that couldn't get off the ground, God love her. It was "I'm going to do it now, watch, I can do it this time, I really can"

plop

"WHYYYYY can't I do them it's not fair everyone else can..."

TonMoulin · 10/01/2021 18:19

I’m struggling to see how this is an issue.

Leave her to it and deal with the ‘look at me’ the same way than anything else.

underneaththeash · 10/01/2021 18:20

My DS did that at that age too and also walked on his hands!
Cartwheels the year after. At 10 he was roller skating around the house.
He's 12 now and just hoverboards everywhere

BeyondFrustrated · 10/01/2021 18:26

How innocent and lovely.

Make the most of it op, before you know it it’s make up and fancying lads.

Eastisup · 10/01/2021 18:40

I've got one of these too! Everytime I see her she's either upside down or doing splits in the doorframe. She started at about 6.
she's 16 now and planning a career in acro dance....

jojoandgrangran · 10/01/2021 19:25

Randomly she's not amazing at any other gym moves. She's just perfected a bridge but only for about 10 seconds. She's practising her splits daily and is about 10cm away and is nowhere near kick backs!
So we do try and practise those every day!
She gets stroppy thought because she finds them hard and just resorts back to hand standing and cartwheeling again.
She's just learned to handstand against the wall and her record so far is about 60 seconds!

My daughter is 13 and when we went out for a walk in the snow yesterday she couldn’t resist cartwheeling through an empty car park!
She still does handstands against a wall in the sitting room every day. I like it to be honest, wish I had that energy,

EBathory · 10/01/2021 19:30

This is what my mum called the 'arse in the air' stage, I'm no help to you as I spent from 6-11 'arse in the air' Grin

Seeingadistance · 10/01/2021 20:11

That was me over 49 years ago.

Lovely to see so that so many of us were the same.

billy1966 · 10/01/2021 20:16

My girls loved the crab, I couldn't watch.
They were constantly at it.
They too were doing gymnastics.

I remember as an 11 year old 45 years ago going through a stage of constantly doing hand stands.

I remember it clearly.

My whole class were absolutely obsessed for most of the year.
Can't remember why.

I do remember we used to line up and do hand stands on top of each other.

The memory feels like it must have been very dangerous but we adored it.🤷🏻‍♀️

Johannessledge · 10/01/2021 20:19

DS (7) is a bit like this. The hand stands, shoulder stands, cartwheels and somersaults are not too bad. What drives me nuts is him using the bannisters as parallel bars. If his hand slips or he misjudges anything he will fall down the stairs. He has not been able to attend gymnastics since March and he needs more ways to release all of his energy.

maras2 · 10/01/2021 20:38

That was me 60 years ago.
It was a compulsion of sorts.
My parents asked our doctor what to do .......... He had no idea .......... then
Asked our Priest (yep, that family) Who suggested that I should give it up for Lent which was a few weeks away.
So on the threat of eternal damnation ............ Guess what .........?
I did it in secret but confessed every week and said my penance. Blush Halo
Anyway I'm still here to tell the story and no longer,do what we used to call 'tossing up'
Your child will eventually grow out of it as I did.(can't exactly remember when though}
Sorry, old gimmer ramblings. Smile

thriftyhen · 10/01/2021 20:42

Age 6, my friend and I spent every break time doing headstands - seriously for the whole of break time - until the teachers put a stop to it!

Voice0fReason · 10/01/2021 21:39

I used to do this all the time as a child.
I'm so glad it never irritated my mum! (I just checked with her to make sure she wasn't humouring me. )

WithASpider · 10/01/2021 22:27

I used to do handstands with my friends every break time at primary school. At home too. I stopped at some point before High school but gave my friend a heart attack when he caught me stretching out my back at 6m pregnant by doing handstands up the wall in the yard. Give me a stretch of grass and I'll still do it now at 40!

partyatthepalace · 10/01/2021 22:42

See I was a totally unsporty child, and this just makes me jealous, even now -

I know it’s driving you mad, but actually your description is a lovely image of a happy little girl 🤸‍♂️

MustardMitt · 10/01/2021 22:47

My 9 year old is like this. Not handstands at the moment, but it was, then it was backflips on my bed, now it’s clambering over the banister like a monkey up a tree.

Peetaly · 10/01/2021 22:51

This was me 😂. I’m still partial to handstand now when the mood takes me!

Iggly · 10/01/2021 22:54

My dd is like this. I’m just glad she’s doing some exercise during lockdown! We just make sure she does it where there’s space.

CryMeAnAquifer · 10/01/2021 22:58

My 6 year old DS is also constantly upside down! Headstands, handstands, splits... watches TV upside down. If he gets sent to his room we can just hear him doing cartwheels endlessly up there 🙈

Will follow the YouTube advice!
