Can you make sound come out of your ears?

I can make clicking and roaring noises in my ears, and the truly weird thing is that others can hear the clicking.

I always thought it was all in my head, until one day I was curled up on the sofa, clicking away in my head, with teen dd snuggled up next to me, and suddenly she asked "What's that clicking noise?"

Google suggests that I am tensing my tensor tympani muscle to make the roaring noise, but I cannot find any explanation for how I make the clicking noise. I think it must be something to do with the Eustacian Tube, as I cannot do it when I'm bunged up with a cold.

Any other ear weirdies out there, who can generate sound from their ears?

Yes, I can click my ears - it's normal? When I was a child I'd occasionally be told not to do it because making random noises is a bit rude, but I never met anyone who was physically unable to do it.

It's a bit like saying you can fart. Sure, you can. Well done you. But most people don't!

SarahAndQuack · 09/01/2021 23:45

(DD does the roaring noise for fun, because she thinks she sounds like a dinosaur. Apparently - based on the other mums in my antenatal group - this is standard too.)

Harmarsuperstar · 09/01/2021 23:45

I would disagree that it's something anyone can do! I can't do it, anyway, and I've never heard of anyone else being able to do it

Clymene · 09/01/2021 23:46

I've never heard of anyone being able to do this!

grapefruitish · 09/01/2021 23:47

What??? From your ears? Definitely a no from me, I can't even think how I would try!

SarahAndQuack · 09/01/2021 23:47

@Harmarsuperstar, are you sure? Try closing your mouth and flexing the muscles at the back of your throat/nose (as you would to 'pop' your ears on a plane). It's around that area. It is much easier to show people in person, but honestly, it's a normal bodily movement.

MargotLovedTom1 · 09/01/2021 23:49

I can't do it either.

Clymene · 09/01/2021 23:49

No honestly I really haven't ever come across people who can make clicking and raring sounds with their ears

I can’t make my ears click but I can with my eyes.

MargotLovedTom1 · 09/01/2021 23:53

You can make your eyes click?!

NewjobOldme · 09/01/2021 23:55

I can't make my ears click. I've never heard anyone else's ears click. I can make them make a rumbling sound though, which I found out recently not everyone can do.

SnowyAlpaca · 09/01/2021 23:58

I can do the clicking and the roaring noise too but I think I can only hear it in my head, not anyone else

Frownette · 09/01/2021 23:58

I can make my ears click but not sure if it's audible to others.

Eyes...? Never heard of that!

ChristmasSexyTime · 10/01/2021 00:02

I can't believe people on here have never met anybody who can't make their ears make clicking or roaring noises! Even my dog sits there of an evening making his ears make funny roaring, dinosaur noises.

Do you all live under rocks!?

(jk, obv). Grin

ShowOfHands · 10/01/2021 00:02

Yes to the rumbling/roaring but no idea re the clicking. Not sure how you'd click your ears.

ChristmasSexyTime · 10/01/2021 00:03

Seriously though. If anybody can teach me how to make my ears roar like dinosaurs, I would cross your palms with silver.

AnnaSW1 · 10/01/2021 00:03

I've always done the roaring noise but never made a click. But I just did it whilst reading this thread and realise there is a tiny click at the end that others can maybe hear.

TokenGinger · 10/01/2021 00:03

Yes! I can make like a clicking/rumbling noise with my ears, but I'm not sure it's possible for anybody else to hear. If it is, the my DP has been very polite not to point it out Grin

SarahAndQuack · 10/01/2021 00:03

I promise I'm not bonkers - though see why you might think so! Grin

Apparently (I googled too) if we couldn't do this, our ears would blow at a high altitude. So it's a basic human thing. It's more audible with some people than others, but it's absolutely not strange.

RaininSummer · 10/01/2021 00:05

How very weird. As far as I know, nobody I know does this and I have never heard of it.

gggrrrargh · 10/01/2021 00:07

People can make their ears and eyes makes noises. To think I’m still impressed with those who can wiggle their ears, this feels next level.

I’m commenting on this thread as I feel there will be more face noises revealed along the way!

FrankiesKnuckle · 10/01/2021 00:08

I have recurrent sinusitis, when it's bad I hold my nose and blow and an audible squeak comes out of my ears.

nopenotplaying · 10/01/2021 00:11

I have a funny thing with my ears too. If I hold my nose and blow as if I'm trying to pop my ears I get a clicky/popping noise and I feel something move. Then if I press my face beside my ear it feels a bit puffy and when I push it it makes the same noise. I first noticed it when trying to blow up one of those long sausage balloons you get in a multi pack GrinGrin

Yes, I've always been able to do this (as a child I used to think that was what people meant by 'not listening' as I could block out what they were saying to me when I didn't want to hear it) but I can't do the clicking.
