St. Fagans National Museum of History

I saw a thread about Glastonbury and it reminded of St Fagans.

Has anyone been? I went a couple of years ago and felt so uncomfortable the entire time and could not wait to get out of there!

There are houses you can go into- I literally ran out. I felt like I was being watched.
It really freaked and never forgot it .

Anyone else been and felt like this?

I used to go there on school trips. We’ve taken DS there a few times.Always enjoyed it.

No, not felt like that there, or at any other living history museums such as Beamish or Black Country Living, or Museum of Kent Life. I love them.

Went to St Fagan's about 40 years ago on a school trip & was amazed that you could go in those old houses. Went again a few years ago & my only regret was we didn't spend longer there. I think it sparked off an interest in buildings & architecture- although I haven't chosen that as a career.

I loved St Fagans, I hated going down Big Pit though.

When going into the houses I just felt like I was in someone’s house uninvited.
It felt really spooky. I just felt it had a very sad atmosphere and always felt like there were unseen eyes looking at me.
I remember getting back to the car and felt relieved

My mum absolutely loved it and didn’t pick up on a spooky vibe

Must just be me?

I love St Fagans too, all the old buildings are fascinating, picturing how you would have lived in the past. I went to a similar outdoor history museum with salvaged/rescued old buildings in Romania which was brilliant too. But St Fagans is especially fab - it’s free, and you can take your dog too! Wales has the right idea :-)

These other places people are mentioning in the U.K., do they have rescued historical buildings too?

No, I love St Fagans. Used to love going as a child and was v excited to take my own children there recently (no longer live locally). It's fab- I love that little terrace of houses through different times.

We go to St Fagans a lot and have never picked up a vibe there.

In fact I always feel better after a wander around, especially the castle gardens.

Loved going there, always got orange swirly boiled sweets Grin I’m quite woo and never had a bad feeling there

Love St Fagans and exploring the old buildings. Perhaps it is something about about dark, small and smoky some of the houses are? The thick walls and tiny windows are certainly quite claustrophobia-inducing. Imagine having to self-isolate in one of them!

@Twiceover, I live near St Fagans and adore the Street through Time. Never get bored of it! I’m only disappointed you can’t go upstairs in those houses. I am intrigued by the tiny staircases!

I love it but understand how you felt. I also felt a presence but not a sad/spooky one. I especially felt it in the church and the farmhouse along with the row of houses from each era( some houses more than others). I enjoy my visits and don’t feel unwelcome but Interestingly they do have ghost tours

Some of it is creepy, yes, part of the attraction.

Loved it! Such shame can’t go again for the foreseeable. Didn’t feel creepy although got harassed by a bee outside the front (modern) building, which you enter through

I loved St Fagans, I hated going down Big Pit though.
I got the shivers in big pit too! I've been on a ghost hunt in St Fagans, you wouldn't have like that OP! Part of it went to the old chapel and pointed out the steel contraption they put over the bodies while they were laid at rest before being buried to stop graverobbers/large animals getting to them!

Nope, I love St Fagans. They do an awesome after dark Halloween event too with lots of fun spooky stuff going on.

I know I went into I think the old farm house and literally ran out!

The painted red house made me feel weird and the wooden bed with death carved into it Shock

I absolutely love St Fagend's, especially the row of houses that show how the terrace looked inside in different time periods, ending with the miners strike in the 80s.

It's a great day out for all ages.

I love St Fagans but as a child did find the Red House unnerving. As a result, I don’t go in as an adult.

We live in Cardiff and the DC seem to be always there for school trips. Studying the Victorians? Visit St Fagans. Studying the Celts? Visit St Fagans etc etc As a result, they are quite fatigued by it and I think that’s a shame - it’s fabulous. Will they serve real beer in The Vulcan?
