The saga continues to continue with more sequels than a trilogy of trilogies...

Good luck @TrustTheGeneGenie and everyone else who is homeschooling today as well as trying to do 101 other things Flowers Hats off to you all - I’m struggling just to actually do some work!
Headlines do look a bit less gloomy today. Fingers crossed !

Iheartmysmart · 14/01/2021 09:31

Gosh! Even our local paper who have been informing us on a daily basis that the end is nigh, don’t have a single Covid article in their top 10 today. I wonder if there will be a Bobby Ewing in the shower moment soon and we will realise last year was just a bloody awful dream.

Yes, that's something else

I cannot believe my taxes are paying for this shit.

Morning all. I have had a reasonably positive start to the day, despite the torrential rain. Walked out with my two dds to drop DS off (it is his last day at school today before we lose our critical worker place). Treated myself and the girls to a totally non-essential trip to M & S for a few treats - pastry for the girls, some nice lunch for me. All very civilised. No one making a fuss about masks. Nice walk home in the rain with DD immersing herself in muddy puddles.

Working tomorrow so trying to make the most of time hanging out with the girls today.

Hope everyone is OK, especially those juggling home schooling with jobs and other kids.

Am preparing myself to read the news...

What would you do ladies regarding the vaccine. Our hospital trust have begun rolling out the vaccine to staff (Pfizer) but in line with government directives are giving the second dose 12 weeks or so after the first one. Lots of people unhappy about this as it’s going against Pfizer’s recommendations and also the WHO. There is an interesting article in the BMJ about this also saying that they don’t even know if there is any protection beyond 3 weeks. Sorry I don’t know how to link. The rest of the world are watching the uk to see if this “experiment” works out.
I therefore don’t know whether to have the vaccine and maybe get some level or protection or just not bother. I’m not sure I believe that you get 89% protection after the first dose which is the official line. What to do?

Buzzinwithbez · 14/01/2021 10:45

Basically compliance is pretty high, but the main problem is that enough people are not isolating with symptoms (and we know asymptomatic spread is low) - so he focuses on this being the one thing that would make a big difference

I agree. I'd add that what is being classed as asymptomatic is likely to be people with mild symptoms other than the three that we are told to look for - the temperature, lack of smell or cough.
The Zoe app picks up on many more infections since it looks out for a much wider range of symptoms..

What’s the video? Is it another ludicrous overreach on the part of the police?
Buzzinwithbez · 14/01/2021 10:48

Interesting discussion on this thread today.

I think Mercy meant this video

It's really something

The strange symptoms are interesting. I had what looked very much like covid toes in August 2019. Unlikely to have been covid back then but could have possibly been a different coronavirus maybe? Or something completely unrelated. I know my immune system was terrible as it was when I was getting near constant mastitis.

CoffeeWithCheese · 14/01/2021 11:15

I've had strange mouth ulcers since this all started. They're my number 1 stress symptom.

I'm in the middle of a sciatica, lower back pain from my buggered pelvis and SPD flare up - hours on a computer is NOT fun but need to get as much done as I can while the kids are at school.

GrrrrrrArghhhhh · 14/01/2021 11:19

My first symptoms were headache and fatigue... fever came 2 days later...never had cough... loss of smell and taste I didn't notice until I started to feel better ( which for me was fairly quick) and it's still not fully back 2 months on... whole illness was mild, as it is for the majority...

amicissimma · 14/01/2021 11:33

Here's the jogging video.

Not that the jogger is much better informed as he says that the government says we can do one hour exercise. But there's no time limit in England.

TabbyStar · 14/01/2021 11:55

I don't think the changes to dose are great, but the protection ramps up to around 85-90% after two weeks. There are some questions about longevity, but this is mostly because it's not been tested rather than it's unlikely to give longevity. The 12-week decision will have been made on how other vaccines work. I'd go for it if it were me.

TheOrchidKiller · 14/01/2021 12:11

@Aztectrousers
Colleagues who have had the pfizer vaccine have had their second dose pushed back to March so that more people can get the first dose more quickly. General feeling seems to be that colleagues are keen to keep getting those first doses booked in so that they're in the booking system & don't get missed altogether.

The Oxford AZ jab had a 12 week gap between doses (I think I had a 10 week gap with mine on the trial). We're all still doing weekly covid tests & having blood tests for the 12 months after our 2nd dose, to see how long it lasts.

Re headaches as a symptom : I get loads of headaches. Mostly tension-related. I guess if you never get headaches & you get one suddenly for no obvious reason it might be worth getting tested? I don't know. I hate the way this illness has caused so much health anxiety.

MoltenLasagne · 14/01/2021 12:40

We've got thick snow here and it seems the council haven't bothered to grit the roads yet again. We've been told they've had to reduce services due to Covid but I'm not sure its going to help the NHS when there's a massive increase in car accidents being brought in to A&E.

Ah, so stress might explain why my psoriasis has flared up after 20 years of lying dormant. My elbows, armpits and knees are on fire and the itching is keeping me awake at night.

Recycledblonde · 14/01/2021 12:49

Oh dear, I’ve bitten on the “Irritated at the stay home messages thread” and had a rant. Better don my hard hat, it was just so nice to see someone as pissed off at it as me.

WouldBeGood · 14/01/2021 12:55

Another consequence of lockdown is that gritting is less effective with less volume of traffic.

WouldBeGood · 14/01/2021 12:56

More fascinating facts later 😂

Blobby10 · 14/01/2021 13:02

I ventured 'over there' earlier and posted on a vaccine thread - is it really true that if you have a healthy immune system you are more at risk as your body over reacts to covid and makes you really ill? 😱 After having glandular fever at 19 (not hospitalized despite temp of well over 40 for over a week as it was a virus and you just have to let your body do its thing and get rid of it!) and experiencing the post viral fatigue I don't think anything Covid throws at me could be worse than that.

ISaySteadyOn · 14/01/2021 13:06

Do you know what I watched with the DC this morning? An old Magic School Bus episode about the immune system. Would highly recommend. It's on Netflix if anyone has it.

SirSamuelVimes · 14/01/2021 13:16

Oh my god the runner video! I hadn't seen it before. It's insane! This is what happens when you give a lot of little people a bit of power (and a lot of misinformation).

We've built an outstanding snowman today. Going sledging later. Homeschool can do one.

I'm watching Steph's packed lunch and wherever it is filmed has loads of snow. I am Envyhere in SE we just have relentless rain Sad
