The saga continues to continue with more sequels than a trilogy of trilogies...

@TooManyPlatesInMotion

Apologies, it's behind a paywall, but if you do have access then this is sobering reading. An article on the devastating effects of school closures: www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2021/01/13/devastating-impact-lockdown-school-closures-children-laid-bare/

Throughout, there has been constant talk of protecting the "vulnerable" from Covid. It makes me furious that the term was and is so narrowly defined; aren't children vulnerable purely due to their age? Who has been advocating for them? Angry

Yes, I thought something similar on my drive to work this morning when they were discussing the food for FSM, that whilst we think this course of action is protecting the vulnerable, we are actually creating more vulnerable right now and for the very future.
wanderings · 13/01/2021 21:04

@MercyBooth Exactly. With lockdown, the government is CREATING a whole host of problems which they won't have to deal with, because they'll resign just before the shit really hits the fan. Saint Boris's resignation is most likely planned for just before the end of furlough, so that he can distance himself from the reality of the millions unemployed as a result of HIS lockdown. The government's silence on the consequences of their beloved lockdown is absolutely deafening.

TabbyStar · 13/01/2021 21:15

I want to go swimming in the outdoor pool at my gym then be able to sit and have some lunch in the cafe.

I've just spent an hour pulling together evidence that counters the MSM narrative about everything for my mum who was clearly sceptical about everything that I was saying about hospital numbers, excess deaths, and lockdowns not reducing deaths, oh, and the fact that Vallance and Whitty were censured by the statistics agency for their crap use of out-of-date models. I feel a bit weird doing it, but she couldn't believe that "scientists" might not be telling the entire truth.

ISaySteadyOn · 13/01/2021 21:17

It really is.

110APiccadilly · 13/01/2021 21:32

Hello all. Not sure I've caught up with the thread but Flowers for everyone struggling.

Here's my list:
Go to church and be able to sing.

Take DD to see and be cuddled by my gran.

Go to mum and baby exercise class.

Go swimming.

Go for a walk with my shielding friend and her awesome dog.

Most of all, stop having to watch DH's mental health decline as he's separated from the support networks we've carefully built up.

DrRamsesEmerson · 13/01/2021 21:45

Yes, church and singing are on my list too.
Go to the theatre.
Go to the ballet
Go to the opera
Get DD back to her orchestra and choir
Have friends to dinner
Meet friends in restaurants
Visit my family and stay overnight
Have some amazing holidays to make up for the lack of travel this past year.
Get back to the office and see my brilliant team in person.
Burn down my home office (not really, but it's a shed in the garden and I do occasionally fantasise about torching it)

Weneedmusicandtheatre · 13/01/2021 21:53

Get back to rehearsing and performing.
Get bored of singing Christmas carols as I do my 30th carol service of the year somewhere around 2nd December.
Meet up with my siblings and their DC and our mum all together and get a pic of the DC together for the first time since summer 2019.
See all my relatives.
Eat all the cheese and drink champagne with friends
Visit my best friend overseas and give her a bloody big hug.

Recycledblonde · 13/01/2021 22:25

Things on my to do list.
See my sister
Go on our celebratory 30th wedding anniversary holiday we had booked for last year.
Carry on with the plan I had to make more local friends by joining things and becoming more part of the community.
Meet friends regularly for coffee and walks.
Cuddle my godson, I work with his Mums but haven’t seen him since the summer.
Arrange lots of holidays, weekends away etc.
Quietly campaign to hold this shower of shit to account for the mess they’ve made of tackling the pandemic.
Reevaluating my relationships with people I know who seem to have lost all sense of compassion. I feel it has shown me how people actually regard mental health in spite of the lip service they paid to it in better times.

TabbyStar · 13/01/2021 22:36

This is a really interesting thread (when covid is over I will still be ploughing through the data!)

Basically compliance is pretty high, but the main problem is that enough people are not isolating with symptoms (and we know asymptomatic spread is low) - so he focuses on this being the one thing that would make a big difference mobile.twitter.com/rowlsmanthorpe/status/1349469563222700037

BogRollBOGOF · 13/01/2021 22:37

Impressive aubergine!
I'm pleased with my courgette from tonight's shop... it has a mighty girth Grin

I've realised I've become numb to the death figures. 1k, 10k, 100k in a day. It means nothing to me now. I have no idea what it means if I should be scared or not. Surely they'll move on from this constant reporting soon? At some point people just will be so used to these figures none of us will care.

BogRollBOGOF · 13/01/2021 23:08

One of the conspicuous ommisions that I wonder about is with this new, more transmissible form... but what is the impact on its severity/ complications risk. Is that not becoming apparent now? I'm sure we'd hear if it was worse. Does silence mean it might actually be milder?

OP posts:
TabbyStar · 13/01/2021 23:10

Not sure about milder but I saw something earlier that suggested estimates of increased transmission had been downgraded at bit from 50-70% to 30-50%.

BogRollBOGOF · 13/01/2021 23:14

That sounds more reasonable. 70% is a heck of a jump!

Hiya, just checking in. Been super tired post-appointment so I'm sorry that I haven't been online. Spent the afternoon watching impeachment and Junior Bake Off with DDs to avoid homework. They are now desperate to do some baking, Lord preserve us. (Less desperate to become US elected representatives. DD1 was quite worried, "Why is that man crying?" DD2: "Why do they ALL keep saying God Bless America at the end? Does Boris Johnson say God Bless Britain when he makes a speech?" Probably better not to give him ideas tbh.)

When lockdown is over I want to...

Go to France! And see my family, who I haven't seen for MORE THAN A YEAR!
Go to the ballet
Have looooooaaaaaaads of people over, all the time!
Go to the shops, not wearing a mask
Play tennis
Go swimming
Go somewhere for a day out, just Richmond or something... anywhere!
Go to some museums, not wearing a mask.

Not much to ask for, I don't think!!

My tests all went okay but it was a bit long and drawn out, as always. I have an appointment on Friday for follow up. The nurse who took my blood made me laugh today because she was asking how old my kids are and she said, "Aren't you a young mum?" I'm 33 and I don't feel young at all, lol. I feel ancient and decrepit. It is almost annoying that I still look quite youthful and unsullied on the outside. I feel like my hair should be at least be growing back grey or something, lol.

BogRollBOGOF · 14/01/2021 00:24

It's good to be complimented even if if doesn't feel like it tallies up! (Hope all is well too)

I felt ancient at 32 thanks to the pain of SPD. I feel better now at the end of the decade!
I was 29 when DS1 was born... and very puffy and yellow thanks to complications at the end of labour. On main ward after some time in HDU, they were doing the drug round. She asked for my DoB and I rattled it off... and she asked again and I repeated it and she scowled at the sheet, realised what I said and that the sheet tallied up and admitted to being rather confused because she thought I was 10 years younger. Amazing what a deranged liver function and emergency surgery can do for a girl Grin

I just cut my leg on something in the kitchen. It wasnt until after id used the TCP on it that i noticed the TCP is seven months out of date.
Smells normal though. Its OK right?

MercyBooth · 14/01/2021 00:28

Glad your tests went ok @Jourdain11 And 33 is young. Smile

110APiccadilly · 14/01/2021 02:29

I don't know how the journalists involved can write this stuff without seeing how insane it is. A Tesco in Wales has been told off because shoppers can still manage to get at the adult clothes and the toys. Oh the horror, a shop selling toys! Can't have that, can we?

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-55650556

Incidentally, on adult clothes... about two years ago, my mum had to go and buy emergency clothes for me because I'd been admitted to hospital via ambulance without a change of clothes (and mum couldn't get to my house without a car, which she didn't have at the time). But I'm sure that hasn't happened to anyone in Wales in the past 4 weeks. Given adult clothes are not essential and all.

MercyBooth · 14/01/2021 02:50

wait till you see the vid of the runner on the waterfront

LivinLaVidaLoki · 14/01/2021 07:02

Morning all!
Just seen that apparently the "new variant" is believed to be 30 to 50 percent more transmissible, not over 70.

So once again, locked down on the back of dodgy data. Ffs

Lifeinaonesie · 14/01/2021 07:08

I was thinking the new variant is a blessing in disguise. Get this thing done quicker!
I wouldn't be at all surprised if it was milder. But then 'over therr' they're all screaming about the South African and other variants so who knows?

Reedwarbler · 14/01/2021 08:12

Is it me, or do I detect signs of the government backing away a little from the pandemic. Several items of news, including the 'Oh, it's not quite as infectious as we thought' new variant stuff, to the fact that, there are headlines today that they have now discovered that having had covid does actually give you immunity (no shit), and, also, that they are going to start discharging people back to care homes, (is that a good idea? I don't know). I might be looking for light where none exists, but there seems a slight change of tone.

Iheartmysmart · 14/01/2021 08:13

Isn’t there one from Brazil that’s causing a panic at the moment. I’m sure Boris and his army of doom will find a way to lock us up for longer on the back of that.

Bollss · 14/01/2021 08:17

Checking in. Got a lovely day of homeschooling/ learning lined up because school is closed for snow. Wish me luck ad 's.

It is bloody miserable. I really need to do the big shop later too. Typical.

How are you all today?
