The saga continues to continue with more sequels than a trilogy of trilogies...

@LivinLaVidaLoki

Just saw a petition on Facebook to make nhs wages tax free.....

Yeah that's what we need heading into a massive financial crisis and the NHS in pieces....millions of people not paying any tax.

Plus I think there are an awful lot of people who don't have a clue a) How many people are employed by the NHS and b) How few of them are patient facing and/or health care professionals.

Also, how many people are in jobs, not directly employed by the NHS. that are absolutely essential to the NHS providing their service.

So many sad posts today, my sympathy to everyone.

I found the BMJ article posted upthread very helpful. The blaming & shaming culture about at the moment is making things much worse. It was nice to read something sensible.

I am trying to close my ears & eyes to every call for tighter restrictions & tighter lockdowns, & don't want to contemplate what that might mean. I feel frustrated that we're only one week in to this lockdown so to my inexpert mind this means we need to give the current measures more time to work. Obviously, no one wants hospital admissions for covid to get worse, but I really do feel that MH is going to implode if we make restrictions tougher.

@justasking111 my DH used to be like that over money. It was a combination of his upbringing & his own anxiety. He ended up having a breakdown & got therapy (I'm not saying that'll happen to your DH). It got very wearing, having to live by his financial rules, even though we were actually ok financially, & aren't that materialistic. However, a small benefit of restrictions is not having to negotiate with PILs over going out for lunch- on a day to suit them because they've got an offer that can only be used when there's an R in the month if there's a full moon. Even if we're paying, MIL will insist, "but I've got a voucher!" Grin

@ISaySteadyOn

You know what I have just noticed? Throughout everyone's worries and distress, every post in response is empathetic and wishing to help and trying to reassure and sympathising. You are all a wonderful bunch and when we all feel hopeless, we ought to remember that there are women all over who are on our side. Here's to you, ADs, you are all bloody amazing Wine!
It's how we've stayed bonded together through about 50 odd threads. (Some very odd Wink ) We all have different circumstances, but we all recognised that it was OK to struggle for whatever reason and not a race to the bottom.

I'm hiding in my dc2s room and I've heard the shopping arrive and dc1 has bounded downstairs to see whats in the bags. This has never happened before. The highlight of her week now, ffs.

I was in the bank today and was puzzled to see a sign saying they were monitoring mobiles in case anyone was a close contact

Well, i think it said that, I just needed to use the cheque machine

It was very busy, understandably lots of people have bank stuff to do so
I can imagine getting caught in the 2m trap.

Anyone know what that's about? No mention of the app. It sounded as if they just track any mobiles.

I shouldn't have to go in a bank anytime soon, but may need to leave my mobile at home.

Tbh, I am angry. DS in tears because he has no one to play with and no one but me to talk Pokémon with. He is six. He should be out wrestling around with other little boys and I should be fruitlessly telling them to be careful with those sticks before they poke someone's eye out.

Instead he cries and pretends the sticks are his friends. I want someone to tell the truth and admit that they don't care about the impact on children. That it wasn't their consideration.

I work for the NHS and think I’m quite lucky, not badly paid and am not going to lose my job. I certainly would not support making my salary tax free, it’s utterly ridiculous even though I am frontline. Yes I am knackered but I was knackered this time last year and mainly from the same reasons, people calling 999 for cut fingers and smelly belly buttons.🙄There are lots of COVID patients but a lot would have presented with chest infections etc at this time in a normal year. It is busier because they have all presented at the same time.
NannyGythaOgg · 11/01/2021 20:00

I wonder how many, if any, are getting it more severely because of restrictions and fear mongering.

Less exercise and weight gain due to both restrictions and self medicating with crap food and alcohol and reduced immune system down to continual (dis)stress levels.

I suspect there is a significant if immeasurable effect

wanderings · 11/01/2021 20:05

When are the government going to talk about:

  • The devastating effect on mental health, especially in children and teenagers, and what they are going to do about it.
  • The devastating effect on business, and what they are going to do about it.
  • The millions unemployed which will result as soon as furlough ends, and what they are going to do about it?
If they only admitted that these are imminent very real problems for the public, all created and exacerbated by the "necessary" (and gloated over by Mumsnet) lockdown, I'd have a shred of respect for their message.

While we are all bored at home, wondering if we'll still be in a job come the summer, we have plenty of time to brood on these things, while the privileged Saint Boris and his merry men are pretending these very real issues don't exist, and they just keep ramming "people will die, stay at home" down our throats.

The government's silence on these very pressing issues is deafening. We had Saint Boris making a few crackpot speeches last summer with "boost for Britain": all the usual wiffle waffle, with no actual plans.

Bollss · 11/01/2021 20:07

My nhs wage is not good. Less than 20k a year full time. But, it's stable and it's interesting, and it's flexible. Would it be nice if I didn't have to pay tax? sure but I don't think I deserve it, and it would sit well with me that everyone else would inevitably pay more tax to fund it.

Bollss · 11/01/2021 20:08

*wouldn't

Jourdain11 · 11/01/2021 20:18

Sad times today, I'm sorry that everyone has such difficult and sad stuff going on.

DH took DD2 on a murdering spree to Lidl this evening and they got apprehended at the counter buying Muller corners. A lady said sniffily, "that's hardly essential shopping, now, is it?" Apparently DH was on the point of rolling eyes and saying something sarky, when DD2 fixes said woman with a sorrowful gaze and says, "Actually, they're for my mummy. She's very sick. She has cancer." The woman apparently looked horrified and was all like, "you poor pet" and said she should have minded her own business (which was decent of her!). But God, what a manipulative little so-and-so - what on earth is she going to be like as a teenager?!

(Anyway, I was happy to have the Muller corners!)

NannyGythaOgg · 11/01/2021 20:22

@Jourdain11 your daughter is an absolute star - I don't envy you dealing with her when she is a teenager. She is amazing.

Pleasedontdothat · 11/01/2021 20:24

@Jourdain11 your dd2 sounds fab Grin

TheOrchidKiller · 11/01/2021 20:24

@ISaySteadyOn
I'm sorry. Your story about your DS is hearbreaking. Little boys absolutely should be out with their friends, we all should be out with our friends. (If anyone is lurking & thinks I'm advocating breaking the roolz, I don't mean that. I mean that this current existence is not normal for human mental health. It's also wrong that we sometimes have to post disclaimers on this thread, just to avoid aggro from passers-by).

No, NHS staff must not be exempt from taxes! How do people think things like the public sector is funded?!

TheOrchidKiller · 11/01/2021 20:26

Blimey, so a Muller Corner isn't essential now? What a cheeky woman! Jourdain your daughter is ace!

I love your kids Grin Mine just fight in the supermarket.

I did take DS2 (only) shopping to cheer him up shortly after your supermarket AIBU, just because it was the most exciting thing he'd done for a couple of months, more exciting than his actual early lockdown birthday!

Jourdain11 · 11/01/2021 20:30

I take issue with anyone saying Muller corners aren't essential. I mean, they are yoghurts, they've got calcium!

I am absolutely terrified by the financial future. The money still being wasted makes me weep. Two massive centres for asymptomatic testing opened within easy distance today. All to line the pockets of private companies then we will get taxed to the hilt to pay for it.

NastyBlouse · 11/01/2021 20:34

@Jourdain11 Your daughter is just a wonderful human. And I can’t believe the snoopy people are judging other people’s shopping baskets now.

Mind you, our local neighbourhood Compliance Foghorn keeps blithering on about ‘non-essential packages’ being delivered to other flats. As if he can see what’s in cardboard boxes from 100 metres away with his x-ray JudgeyVision...

@Recycledblonde Do people really call 999 for a smelly belly button? Shock Do you get to set someone right if they call an ambulance out for lint or do you have to do the customer service thing and rant about them privately later?

Bollss · 11/01/2021 20:36

I'm sure I'll get hammered for saying this, but... why would anyone even get an asymptomatic test? I struggle to imagine a circumstance where I would do it, unless I was (for example) going to visit someone vulnerable or something. But it could surely actually be pointless - you have your asymptomatic test, it's negative, you merrily go about your business, yet you could have picked It up the moment you left the testing centre! It's not saying you're Covid free, just that you were when you had the test (or "for a temporary moment in time" as Donald Trump would say).
AcornAutumn · 11/01/2021 20:41

Number37

Yes, I presume it's legal.

Many Tube stations have signs up saying "if your wifi connects to us, you will get targeted ad etc". It effectively means you are tracked.

Big Brother Watch said that dumbphones stick out a mile in protests etc because so few people have them. I'm aware I'm being monitored but I didn't think Covid stuff would happen without the app.

In the first lockdown, when nothing was clear, I didn't take my phone on walks. Obviously I made mum aware but if she presses her emergency button, I am not the nearest contact by miles, so that's not too big a problem.

if supermarkets and banks are going to do this too, I can't take my phone there either.

I gather the definition of "close contact" has changed as well.

Assuming mum passes before I do, I might ditch mobile phone use.

Taswama · 11/01/2021 20:41

Mueller corners are definitely essential and well done your DD Jourdain .

@ISaySteadyOn can you take DS to a local playground, maybe there will be some other little boys there he can interact with if you time it right?
