Salzburg or Slovenia?

I am just dreaming of the holiday I will book as soon as we are allowed (could be a long time off!).

I have whittled it down to these two destinations on account of the beautiful mountain scenery.

Has anyone got any knowledge of either destination and opinion on which one to go for?

Slovenia was beautiful - but so was Salzburg! Both lovely cities, accessible countryside. I’d do both! Sorry that’s not more helpful...

Salzburg of the two- but I speak some German so can at least get fed without having people ask me about Brexit!

Also there are places nearby such as the village where Silent Night was written.

Salzburg is beautiful, we bookended a three days there with some time in Vienna, which is one of my
favourite cities. Three days felt about right, any longer and I’d have wanted to venture further afield.

We went to Ljubljana a few years ago as part of a jaunt around a few Central-ish Europe capitals. It’s a gorgeous little city, again about three days was right for us. Lake Bled is apparently glorious, it’s on the to-visit list.

This probably doesn’t help you at all, but whatever you decide, you’ll have a great time.

Definitely Salzburg, I've been 3 times and it's so lush and beautiful. Also if you like The Sound of Music then it's great! The nicest place I stayed was slightly out of the city in a hotel next to Lake Fuschl which was gorgeous and picturesque.

Slovenia is amazing. And they all speak English so it's very, very easy.

Lake Bled is beautiful,Ljubljana is stunning (just don't walk up the steep incline to the castle on a hit day, I thought I may die).

I’ve been to both. Slovenia was great for families - mine were young teens at the time. Salzburg is a city break , probably better for a couple.
We stayed near lake Bled and travelled around - mountains, city, coast. - had a great time.

QualityStreetxoxo · 08/01/2021 16:40

Omg, will have to do both!

Slovenia is lovely to travel around - in a couple of weeks you can get your fill of a nice little European capital with culture, museums, restaurants in Ljubljana, glorious mountain and lake hiking around Lake Bled (and nearby, even better because fewer people get there, Lake Bohinj), and relaxing coastal resorts by the seaside with good sport and spa stuff to be had (Portoroz and Piran). Makes for a really nice variety-filled getaway.

Not been to Salzburg though!

SalaciousCrumble · 08/01/2021 16:56

Slovenia is heaven! Can't wait to go back. As gannett said, lake Bohinj is less well known and utterly idyllic. Great for hiking, bike riding and swimming.

WankPuffins · 08/01/2021 17:05

One of my favourite memories of Dd is when she was little paddling in Lake Bohinj with the fish around her feet. I really want to go back.

AngryPrincess · 08/01/2021 17:35

Salzburg. Both nice, but I saw my only ever fire flies walking back to a campsite from Salzburg late at night.

infinitediamonds · 08/01/2021 17:53

Slovenia was lovely, would definitely go back.

What time of year are you planning?

Went to Salzburg in November just as the Christmas markets opened and walking round town under the lights with mugs of hot choc was magical. Plenty to do for 3/4 with all the Mozart/Sound of Music stuff and we also went on some bus trips to St Wolfgang and Hallstatt to see the lakes and the mountain railway. These towns were empty of tourists and we loved sitting in the local cafes, watching them prepare for Christmas.

We did Slovenia in summer and to be honest didn’t think Ljubljana was anywhere near as interesting or as beautiful. Lake Bled was gorgeous though- we rowed out on the lake, cycled round it and also explored some nearby waterfalls. You do need a car in Slovenia to get about (public transport in Salzburg is fab!)- we also explored some of their AMAZING caves and then popped over the border to Italy for a pizza in Trieste for dinner! Some of this wouldn’t have been doable in winter and I think we would have run out of things to do sticking to just Ljubljana!

I am thinking that it might be possible to do Salzburg and Slovenia in one trip. I have looked at the map and they aren't that far apart. Apparently there is a train!

This was taken at Ljubljana airport, it’s one of my favourite travel memories.

Slovenia is wonderful and so easy to travel around the whole country.
