Can you get a temperature with food poisoning?

For dinner last night I cooked a couple of packets of microwaveable egg fried rice. I usually cook rice from scratch so it’s not something we would normally eat.
I didn’t have any but dd (12), ds (15) and dh all had some with dh and ds having the lions share as dd is a picky eater.
Within a couple of hours ds said he felt really bloated (he looked it too) and was full of wind which is unlike him as he usually has guts of iron. By 9pm dh felt the same and both were farting and burping like troopers.
This went on all night and at 5am ds called me into his room to say he hadn’t slept all night as he had a tummy ache and now he felt sick. About an hour later he vomited.
He hasn’t thrown up since that one time this morning and has been sleeping it off but I’ve checked his temperature 3 times and it’s been 38.5.
Called dh at work who said he has felt fine all day but did feel full and uncomfortable all night. Dd seems fine (touch wood).
Obviously with the virus I am concerned it could be Covid although both dc have been off school for 4 weeks and have been at home all that time, I just go out for food shopping.
If he still has a temperature tomorrow I will take him to the testing centre.
Can food poisoning give you a high temperature?

Thanks. I don’t think either of my dc have ever had food poisoning so it’s hard to know especially with Covid rife.

yes, you can. Doesn't sound like food poisining if the other two are okay? was the rice hot when you served it? i know reheated rice can be dodgy but wouldnt have thought micro rice would be.

I always overcook stuff! I nuked it for a little longer than it said so was piping hot. Although dd ok, dh had stomach pains and bloating all night too.

i would have thought it would have been fine, i mean rice makes me bloated at the best of times! perhaps he has a bug? hope everyone is feeling better soon and its not covid!

Id have thought if it was food poisoning (especially from rice) they would all have diarrhoea and vomiting, not just be a bit bloated and have a tummy ache. Are you just being coy by using tummy ache to mean explosive diarrhoea?!

Almostslimjim · 08/01/2021 16:08

Please get a test.

To answer your question, yes FP can cause fever, however COVID can also cause an upset stomach!

Haha! No explosions just the vomiting.

We’re going to our local test centre tomorrow just to know for sure.

It won't be the microwave rice, more likely to be a bug. But yes, food poisoning can give you a temperature.

Get a Covid swab. You have a fever. Gastroenteritis live illness is common

I had campylobacter last year, no idea where from.had very high temperature, stomach cramps, wind and very bad diarrhoea.had negative covid test and positive stool sample for campylobacter. Took about ten days to feel better.
