How do you bath when you are on your period?

isitjustifyable · 07/01/2021 17:35

My family home had a separate shower unit, and my whole life I used that. I moved out a few years ago and we put a shower unit in because I hate baths.

My shower has broke, and the time has come 🤣

Is there a method? I bleed so heavily there seems no logical way of doing this. (There is no shower attachment in the bath)

Just after any obvious (or not so obvious) advice please!

Can you not wash your undercarriage using a jug over the bath, insert a tampon and then run a proper bath? Then you can bathe as normal

toomanyspiderplants · 08/01/2021 07:13

It's not weird a question and assuming the flow will stop isn't always correct. I use a mooncup and make it a quick bath. its very unsatisfactory but there you go.

Thank you for the advice

Invest in one of these. It is a lota and can be found in South Asian or Arab shops for around 2.50. I couldn’t do without it as a very heavy bleeder. Fill with warm water and pass water over yourself. Great when not on period too.

I very rarely shower apart from hair rinsing and I ALWAYS bleed in the bath! Who are these miraculous people who don’t!? It simply doesn’t bother me at all to be honest the hot bath is a relief from the hideous cramping and that in itself makes me care not one bit! Rinse off whilst standing up and then jam a wadge of loo roll between my nethers and get dried, job done!

lemonsquashie · 08/01/2021 08:20

Even if you have heavy periods, you only lose about 80ml of blood. It's unlikely all 80ml will flood out of your body during the 20 mins or so you spend bathing.

NorthernLights77 · 08/01/2021 08:33

@lemonsquashie True. It always seems like SOOO much more though doesn’t it? 80 ml or thereabouts really isn’t a lot, it always amazes me when I think about it as it feels and looks like pints and pints of it!! I really wish it would flow out all in one go it would make life so much more bearable.

I really suspect the 80 ml is a vast underestimation for some women.
SoupDragon · 08/01/2021 08:52

That 80ml will be an average.

using a moon cup I can tell you that is a VAST under estimate in my case
Candyfloss99 · 08/01/2021 10:15

A little bit of blood in the bath water is hardly going to kill you.

isitjustifyable · 08/01/2021 10:37

@Candyfloss99 did I say that I was scared for my life?

JollyAndBright · 08/01/2021 10:39

Even if you were having the heaviest flow ever, constantly gushing, verging on anemia every month, this would never happen.

After having DS when I felt like I was almost haemorrhaging, I was literally changing those inch thick pads every 30 minutes, there was never anything close to bright red blood or clots in the bath water, that’s just not how the female body works.
The only way there would ever be anything at all visible in the water would be if you were sitting in it for hours.

Surly common sense just tells you if you are squeamish to clean any blood away before you get in the bath using a wet wipe or a flannel in the sink.
Then get in the bath, have a wash and get out.
Its really not rocket science.

isitjustifyable · 08/01/2021 10:42

@JollyAndBright just because you think you have it worse than everyone else doesn't necessarily make that true

OP posts:
SendMeHome · 08/01/2021 10:44

I’m really sure there was a bit on this in a programme... probably some channel 4 thing. Some people don’t bleed at all in water and find it stop their flow. Others do, and if you do, I guess it’d dissipate in the water and make it go pinky red quite quickly, especially if you’re quite clotty.

It doesn’t happen to me so I have no rea advice, OP... I think I’d use a tampon even if you don’t normally, and then clean any blood off yourself before you get in.

I’ve never really considered that period pants would cover you in blood... that’s put me off them! How do you usually deal with that? Shower twice a day?

Candyfloss99 · 08/01/2021 10:49

No but you are making a mountain out of a molehill. Who cares about some of their own blood being in the bath water?

GWLTM · 08/01/2021 10:52

I just bath like normal. Sure some period gets in the bath.

But it's doesn't stick to you, and have a quick rinse just before you get out if you're that bothered.

isitjustifyable · 08/01/2021 11:04

@SendMeHome I always shower morning and night regardless of being on my period.

This is making me question how much I bleed. I have blood right up to the top of my bum crack after an hour of putting clean protection on. Is this not normal Confused

I think maybe your preferred choice of protection isn’t the best one for you if it’s smearing up your bottom op?

I can’t really help, I’m one of those v lucky sods who has a v light flow, but I can’t imagine even with a massive heavily flow it should be coming up your bum crack??

Maybe as other posters have said, mooncup?

isitjustifyable · 08/01/2021 11:14

@SillyMoomin maybe I need to try a mooncup. Too heavy for tampons and sanitary towels 😩
Thanks for the advice

OP posts:
NorthernLights77 · 08/01/2021 11:21

@isitjustifyable Me too and I don’t have an answer I’m afraid, can’t use tampons/ mooncups as they make my cramps a million times worse if that’s even possible. It’s just something I feel I put up with despite it being uncomfortable and a bit grim, I use moist toilet tissue after changing pads which makes me feel feel cleaner and fresher throughout the day.

NorthernLights77 · 08/01/2021 11:27

Oh and I use extra thick sanitary towels ( think maternity type ) and period pants at the same time. Just about keeps it contained.

JollyAndBright · 08/01/2021 11:39

Where did I say I have it worse than everyone else?

I didn’t mention my own periods at all.

I was simply pointing out what many other women on this thread have stated, that what you have said does not ring true.

Either you are extremely naive, have some serious problems related to your monthly flow or you are full of shit and looking for women to share stories about bathing on their period.... 🤔

FudgeSundae · 08/01/2021 11:52

Ok am I the only one finding this scientifically fascinating?? I come from a family where we all have super heavy periods (on bad days 2 all night pads doubled up would just about last an hour) and my periods have always stopped completely in water, and (sorry bit gross) I even used to go swimming at school etc. without any protection because my mum wouldn’t let me wear tampons and told me to do this (another story!) and it was always fine until I got out of the water - then I had to sprint for the changing rooms.

Sounds like some women are built completely differently? How does this work? Any scientists who can help us with this one?

isitjustifyable · 08/01/2021 11:54

@NorthernLights77 hallelujah I'm not alone!

@JollyAndBright Report my thread then and see if they can vouch for me 🤷🏼‍♀️
