Impressed with teacher

There’s always teacher bashing threads on here but I wanna big up my dd 8 teachers. Yesterday was the first day of virtual learning and he was soo good with the kids, he eased them in, didn’t jump straight to the hard stuff. He gave them a child friendly tour of his flat, I did laugh when he showed the, something educational he had on his wall and mentioned his girlfriend you heard them all giggling 🤭. He then did the register and asked them all what they enjoyed about Christmas. He had organised 2 further check ins throughout the day in case they needed any help. Anyone else impressed with their childs teacher, they are in this too and learning as they go.

Our day started with a teams class live catch up. Very friendly and lovely for the kids to all see each other. The learning objectives and level of engagement expected was clearly explained. The teacher then sent a timetable for this week and attached lessons. All very slick and easy to understand.

Our school have been great. Videos online because they know logging in live won’t work for too many families.

Ds has an ehcp and his 1-1 is still providing provision virtually via teams

DS1's teacher (he's in reception) has been so quick with providing feedback on his work and really encouraging.

The last task of today was a video of her reading a book. My son lit up, he laughed at the funny bits and was so excited.

As parents it's a lot of work for us, but I've found it really rewarding to sit and watch my son work and see how he responds so differently to his teachers as opposed to his parents.

Unfortunately too many children in school for live lessons, if lucky might be one short zoom call next week. The lessons are better than first lockdown but very self directed (year 5)

He sounds lovely but I would get hauled over the coals by my Head for having my camera on at home, let alone giving them a tour of the house!

My dd is in high school and the PE teacher had them all juggling over Teams yesterday. Dd has been juggling on and off all day and it’s completely changed her mood, she was very down but this has given her the lift she needed. Thank you PE teacher!

I'm not sure him showing them round his flat was appropriate (but maybe I've been doing this job too long). There is no way that would go down well at my school. However I'm really glad your happy with the effort going in. I am honestly exhausted and would much rather be in school (without the pandemic obviously).

@Aurorie11 have your school.considered streaming the start of your lessons from school? As in stream the instructions your giving the kids in school home the home learners? I did this last term whilst we had year groups isolating. I was horrified at the thought of it and put in writing my concerns to SLT about streaming possible bad behaviour etc home. But actually it worked really well and was really appreciated by those at home. Not trying to make your job harder .

Yep the online provision this time compared to last March is a total game changer. I can’t be more grateful to our teachers right now. They are amazing.

@user1471530109 no they aren’t doing that would be great if they did. Hugely sympathetic for school, more than 10 times children going in around a third of all children, but as a consequence those who are learning at home aren’t getting live interactions.

Why doesn’t the BBC or other mainstream channels start showing education tv programmes during the day? I remember in the 90s , channel 4 used to show school tv programmes.
That way atleast children without access to laptops or technology can watch it on the tv.
They could even show repeats from the 90s, it would still be fine for younger kids. Why hasn’t anyone done this?

@IHeartKingThistle - I don't get this. Some schools are being really cautious about teachers and pupils using video. Some are quite happy with it.

Presumably all are working to the same safeguarding principles?

@Windinmyhair it's probably because I'm secondary and at a school with a high proportion of vulnerable students. On a personal level though I'd definitely not be comfortable with my classes seeing the inside of my house though so I'm with my Head on this!

The teacher is clearly a responsible person who shares a lot with the kids in day to day schooling. If they judge the environment ok to share, what would the issue be?

I wasn't trying to make out the teacher had acted unprofessionally. I do think it would raise a few eyebrows with most teachers though. It blurs lines. Like the other pp says, maybe working with teenagers changes your view on this (assuming the teacher in question is primary).

I think the vast majority of secondary schools are providing online and live lessons for students. I too have been very impressed with my dds' school and their efforts with this. My eldest in particular seems to be able to independently work with her teachers instructions via zoom. It's made a huge difference.

eeerrr no! Not the way we've been trained and all the other past colleagues I know and are now friends. We've all been using Teams to talk to the students and they hear us and see our screen. So yesterday we started with a PowerPoint and then they did some calculations and I went over them by showing them a photograph of my workings out. Nightmare without a whiteboard! But my SLT would have kittens if I'd showed them round my house.

Like I said, I've been a secondary teacher 18 years and this would always be something that would ring alarms. But maybe it's because teenagers will find anything to take the piss out of. I'm sure the primary class loved it.

Please send an email. It will be a ray of sunshine among all the complaints they're likely recieving.

It would be inappropriate to show your living space because if, later, a child made an accusation against the teacher, being able to describe the interior of the flat would be seen as evidence the child had been there.

Leaving aside the specifics of this teacher's choices, I feel mine have had good provision. I've emailed their school head to say so, as I am sure there will be lots of criticisms.

Secondary teacher here user1471530109 and I agree with you. It’s not the showing of the face but the showing round the flat and for a Secondary teacher, would be a no go. I sit against a blank wall and if I couldn’t, would use a Teams background. It may be because it’s secondary though. My child definitely knows more about her primary teacher’s life (such as name of dog, where they live etc) than most secondary children know of their teachers. Difference being that there will be many secondary kids who will use that information to troll their teachers. Sad but true.

However, this thread is not to criticise and it’s lovely to read. An email to your teacher’s Head OP would make everyone’s day.

They are from Monday cbbc for primary, bbc2 secondary plus on iPlayer. No data required if the kids watch the live broadcast which will help the digital have nots. Should help some wfh parents too

In the summer I showed my children my dogs! But I was teaching 1:1 and their parents were present the whole time. It wouldn't ring alarms to me, sounds like a nice teacher who is trying to make people feel comfortable
