What bank would you recommend?

I'm with Barclays, I find them excellent (though that may be due to having premier banking).

That said, I had a First Direct mortgage which required me to open a FD current account, and they were an absolute pleasure to deal with. Easy to get hold off, very efficient, would highly recommend.

Of, not off

We have been with FD for o er 30 years; DH from soon after it started and me from a few months later when Nationwide we're struggling with the fact that I wasn't PAYE despite an excellent financial history.
We have never had any reason to leave FD since.

I'm with Nationwide, I've always found them really good.

I have my main NatWest account which I have had for over 30 years and the only time I was annoyed was when I tried to transfer a large amount of money and they twice blocked it in case it was fraud. They did this on 2 occasions. I just felt stupid and embarrassed when I had promised money was paid and would arrive same day and then it didn't. They did not go across untill after their fraud department spoke to me the next day. I do like their little security machine thing though for use when setting up a new payee. I also have Lloyds Bank current account for payments to go out for paying bills and I get a small amount of interest each month. Never had problems with Lloyds. I never go into branches do always do online banking.

Been with NatWest for 15 years and have never had any issues.

Nationwide. Been with them 20+ years and always found them to be excellent. I rarely need to use a branch but when I do I have a choice of 3 within a 10 mile radius.

Starling bank (online). Excellent app, card, everything

OllyBJolly · 06/01/2021 22:42

I have accounts with Metro bank, Nationwide and Coop.

Coop is hopeless. Online is awful.

Nationwide is good and I like that it's a mutual.

Metro bank is fab. Great customer service. I thought I might have to change when I relocated from London to Scotland (they don't have any branches here) but it's not been an issue.

Like others I've had a First Direct account since they opened as a telephone bank and then as one of the early online banks. I have other accounts as well and some of the newer banking apps are slicker but I don't have problems with FD online and if I do they have rock solid customer service.

Honestly that customer service when there is a query or problem is worth a lot more than a slightly slicker interface.

madaboutrunning · 07/01/2021 08:47

First Direct. Switched to them when they first opened and the only problems I have ever had with them have been when I couldn't use the app in its early days. They were so helpful and sorted things straight away. My parents have also been with them for over 30 years and can't praise them enough.

Highly recommended.

I love my Monzo account and wouldn't go anywhere else now. I love the app and the features. I hated the clunky FD online banking, and the Handelsbanken one was awful, and I agree that it depends on thr manager. Ours was so sexist, called my job Pin Money, and would never, ever contact me about anything. When I separated I was so happy to email him and tell him I was leaving and removing my name from the account.

I have an account with Nationwide as that is where I have my mortgage, and if I need to pay in money I can do it there. That is the only fall down with Monzo.
