Dp and I split up a few weeks ago

Now im trying to set everything up in my name.

If he was paying the virgin broadband/tv etc if he cancelled ( contract has ended he just kept paying) would i be able to set up as a new customer under my name?

Or does it go by address?

you would be a new custoemr

I was in the same situation (albeit with BT) last year. I think if you go on the live chat on their website they’ll be super helpful - they deal with it all the time.

Whatwouldscullydo · 06/01/2021 17:56

Brilliant. The new deals are so much cheaper. Thanks 😊

If you are now on your own, don't forget you can get a discount on Council Tax.

Whatwouldscullydo · 06/01/2021 17:59

I'm ok thank you. Kind of you to ask.Smile

Just waiting to hear back on what help I can get and wading through the lists of things to do/switch over.

Once I know what money is gonna be coming in I can see what Internet/tv deals I can afford

I applied for that today Smile

Just ring them up as a new customer

Terfterf · 06/01/2021 18:02

I'm in the middle of doing just the same!
For our Shell dual fuel contract, they will not change the name even if DH phones them. He has to end the contract, pay the charge of £30 and then I set up a new contract. So instead we just changed the contact email and phone number to mine and I will run it to end of contract and then switch supplier. If you use Live Chat rather than phone, you can pretend to be your DH Grin

I just dont understand why utilities STILL can't set up contracts in joint names (like banks and mortgages can)? It would be so much easier in the long run.

Good luck OP!

Whatwouldscullydo · 06/01/2021 18:23

I just did the fuel today. Had to get xp to upload a consent form for me to take over it then I've had to switch in my name. He's paying any outstanding costs though!

God its all such hard bloody work

Ok I have one more question of which im confused about.

I applied for the single person discount fir the council tax. And now they sent me a bill for the rest of the yr with discount at least BUT xp already paid off the last of the council tax we should have been clear until it next starts up. I dont even have any money coming yet how can I pay a bill of over 300 quid when a) they already have had the money for the house and b) its due in less than a month and I haven't heard yet if I'm even getting any benefit top up.

When you tell the council about change of circs, it triggers a new 'bill' with the total amount and a breakdown of the monthly payments. Are you sure your xp has paid up until April? That's quite unusual as nearly everyone pays monthly. Our council is really helpful if you ring them about council tax, can you try phoning yours? They really shouldn't expect you to pay a lump sum anyway. If you can't pay, talk to them and arrange an instalment scheme.
It will all look a lot clearer in the new financial year!

shitinmyhandsandclap · 07/01/2021 11:13

Yep, just done all this. I tried to get stuff switched to his name but they wouldn't do that, they cancelled my contracts with them, sent me final bills and then sent new letters to the house but not addressed to him - just 'householder'

Whatwouldscullydo · 07/01/2021 11:30

Yes he always paid in lump sums on.advanve rather than monthly. He's self employed ( builder ) so found it easier to pay it off when he had it so when there was no work due to bad weather and/or off work over Xmas unpaid then we didnt have to worry about it.

Managed to get through to someone and they are going to take the balance out the pay off and refund the extra to XP but I will have to wait for him to finish work to check his account to make sure they have done it.
