Overlapping car insurance for a few days

Car insurance runs out on sat, have rung to cancel as I could get it cheaper elsewhere. Transport issues with DP means he could really do with taking my car away to work for the rest of the week (works away) and I don't need it as I'm WFH, he needs to leave at 5am at the latest and I can't ring the car insurance people until 9am. Can I just start a new policy adding him on from tonight even though my current one doesn't run out until Saturday and will be overlapping with 2 policies? Is this a really bad idea?

You should be able to specify a future start date for the insurance to avoid the overlap.

There's no reason why you can't have two policies running at the same time and it's completely acceptable if it's only a few days overlap when you're switching insurers. Just be aware that it can make a claim slightly more complicated if anything happens in the overlap period.
