Messenger app for kids

OneMorePieceofCheese · 03/01/2021 16:00

DD8 has a Kindle Fire Kids, but has access to my adult profile (under supervision) for certain apps that are not available on the kids' profile (like, frustratingly, YouTube Kids).

She chats to her real-life friends on AnimalJam, using their Safe Chat function. Because of homeschool plus enforced regular self-isolation, I would like her to have access to a bespoke messenger app, but one that I can log into regularly to check her usage. She is very grown up and trustworthy, but I would still like to limit a) who she can chat to and b) check the content of her messages occasionally.

Are there any recomendations for kid-friendly messenger services that work on the Kindle Fire?

I'm looking for similar that can be put on an iPad so when she's at her dad's she can message me.
Her iPad doesn't have a sim slot though so I'm not hopeful. They all seem to require a phone number and she doesn't have one Confused

iMessage? Mine have iMessage on old iPod touches with no SIM. They have an iCloud email address. They can only communicate with other Apple users though.

Means they can FaceTime too.

Seems there's a gap in the market here! We don't have Apple (the kids don't anyway!) so am looking for something Android but which I can monitor.

@helloxhristmas

Thanks for that. I'm so tech challenged I just assumed that wouldn't work without a number too!

Sorted. Thanks. Smile

google hangouts is available on all platforms - requires a google email address but you can set one up as a child account using google family. You would need to co-ordinate with her friends parents though - it took ages to agree which platform was acceptable to everyone for my DD's friends and they are at secondary school!

My daughter had Stars on the iPad through the last lockdown.

You can add all apps from the adult kindle to the kids profile you just need to approve each app as my ds likes the countdown app

Ds uses Houseparty to chat, play games and message. I then take a regular look through the chats.
