Are security deposits given back

Yes if there’s no damage etc, deposits should also be held in a scheme rather than by the landlord/letting agents and you can query via the scheme if you think it’s being withheld incorrectly

@Tellmelies65 for rented accommodation? So long as you cause no damage, yes it will. Your deposit is secured with an impartial company. Make sure you have the inventory taken when you move in, and then again When your tenancy ends. Depending on the report , your landlord will either choose to give it all back to you or hold some back based on X. If you disagree, an impartial ombudsmun will get involved and hopefully solve the issue and your deposit will be refunded accordingly

In my experience, they usually try to withhold it as much as possible.

Its down to the landlord to prove to the deposit protection company damage was caused not for you to prove it wasn't. Document when you move in and out. Email confirmation of comments regarding inventory and you'll be grand.

Landlords can't withhold deposit pending proof of payment if bills they are a contract with you and the provider not the the property. So don't fall for this.
