Emergency meeting today agreed it. All boroughs left off now included.

Look at the cases per 100000 in london compared to other tier 4 and that probably explains why

ThelmaNotLouise · 01/01/2021 18:55

@LumpySpacedPrincess

...bit I'm in a tier 4 area with a high infection rate and must return on Monday, nice.
Hopefully other Tier 4 areas will now follow the lead of the London boroughs who took action at being forced to stay open. If it's not safe for schools here to open, how can it be safe in other Tier 4 areas?
Fedup21 · 01/01/2021 18:56

They're reporting that it only happened because the London local authorities threatened to sue the govt

Good.

I hope they release their criteria/infection cut off rates for closing schools so that other areas are properly informed.

I've heard the most concerning part of the Welsh figures is that the new variant hasn't taken hold there yet.

Devolved powers - yes and they need to get on top of it before the easier spreading variant hits them too.

@GameSetMatch

I’m so sick of this North/ South division, are our teachers not worth as much! It’s ridiculous and blatantly obvious.
They want this division, it’s dangerous. But they stoke it up to distract the population from their own ineptitude. If the media aren’t attacking junior Doctors pay, then it’s Nurses or Teachers.
donewithitalltodayandxmas · 01/01/2021 18:57

@wannabangbang most MP's do not live in london , im in tier 4 but our numbers are way lower than london

clareykb · 01/01/2021 18:57

I think though @CreamFacedLoon there is a vast difference in rates across tier 4. Our T4 North East Council has a rate of about 260 down from 400 in November and in the under 10s it is even lower. London has some places that are over 1000 ...seems daft to treat all areas the same. However I am a bit peeved that on October and November when it was rampant here there was no talk of closures.

randomer · 01/01/2021 18:57

This is unbelievable. I am beyond embarassed by this government.

Passmeabottlemrjones · 01/01/2021 18:58

Do the 'what about the North?' brigade not realise that there are Tier 4 areas directly adjacent to London which are open on Monday?

HeronLanyon · 01/01/2021 18:58

Thanks to local authorities for pursuing this and asking what the rationale was for some open some not.
I’m close to having absolutely no faith in this government. A lot is being withheld (sage advice one example) when things are questioned or info is demanded they do u turns. I don’t believe they know what they are doing just when we need calm steady consistent leadership we have these buffoons.
I do believe the scientists and the immunologists and virologists and what we hear from frontline health and care staff.

Please don't forget the Midlands. West Midlands here, tier 4 too.
singsingbluesilver · 01/01/2021 18:59

Why don't they just shut all tier 4 and probably tier 3 schools NOW for the next two weeks and stop all this faffing around? No one is looking good coming out of this fiasco.

UneFoisAuChalet · 01/01/2021 19:00

All tier 4 schools should close.

randomer · 01/01/2021 19:00

I don't think
there is a What about the North 'brigade"
The last thing we need right now is brigades.

Up until recently we were the UK, the United Kingdom. Look at it now tearing itself apart.

Wannabangbang · 01/01/2021 19:00

RMRM not that simple i will be fined £60 per day, per child, per parent. That's £120 a day times that over even a week it's £600 odd

ancientgran · 01/01/2021 19:00

No wonder people are getting confused about what is going on.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 01/01/2021 19:01

Where i used to live in london its 700 odd per 100000 ( think thats a lowish area ) about 190 ish per 100000 in sw where I live now , we are both tier 4 but numbers are quite different

Rockbird · 01/01/2021 19:01

Surrey here. We border two or three London boroughs, can't remember which and we're open on Monday although our cases are high. To hell with us too it seems.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 01/01/2021 19:02

Maybe a tier 5 should if been used if numbers go over a certain amount and then its tier 4 restrictions plus school closures

BangingOn · 01/01/2021 19:03

I don’t think you can treat all Tier 4 areas the same- we have a rate of just over 200 which is significantly less than most areas in London and the SE.

m0therofdragons · 01/01/2021 19:03

We’re tier 4 but our numbers are nothing like those in the south east. However, south east has greater hospital capacity than here. Really Kent and London etc are in tier 5 but we’re just not calling it that. We call it tier 4 and tier 4 extra (as in extra shite)

Wannabangbang · 01/01/2021 19:03

Imho why is Thanet in Tier 4 if it's safe my for children to attend school? Somebody please answer this. I'm not allowed to work and can only go out for excercise or essential shopping but I'm expected (forced) to send my dc to school.

Agoodbriskwalk · 01/01/2021 19:03

Please don't forget the Midlands. West Midlands here, tier 4 too.

This. I'm so sick of the Midlands never getting mentioned. Rates here are awful and they're still planning their Covid soup school opening on Monday?!

m0therofdragons · 01/01/2021 19:04

We’re 170 per 100000 here.

ancientgran · 01/01/2021 19:04

Gavin Williamson really needs to go doesn't he. He has made a mess of everything he's touched so far. Well that's how it looks to me but I confess mine are all grown up so I'm a spectator, feel sorry for parents, it must be a nightmare not knowing from one day to the next what is going on. Of course it is a nightmare for teachers as well.

All the talk of mental health issues with children, we've got no confidence in what is going on so why would children feel safe.
