Is it something that covers you for all rights ownership of everything you write?

It could be anything - it's impossible to say without further details/seeing the contract. Intellectual property includes things such as patents and trade marks, as well as copyright (which would cover ownership of rights in things you write). A contract could be for anything - such as setting out who owns what or selling or licensing the rights.
