Help - I have killed my vacuum cleaner

Due to ineptitude.

Hit me with your recommendations (or avoid-at-all-costs) for a replacement.

Small house, loads of stairs so probably cylinder.
Preferrably bagless.
Have dog so needs to pick up pet hair (labrador so sheds like a bastard).
I have extremely long hair (and I shed like a bastard).
DS has asthma so hypoallergenic filters would be nice too.

Thanks!

Hopeful bump.

Miele Hepa. Amazing machine and they do a pet one too. DH bought a Dyson cordless and it's crap in comparison.

We got a shark lift away on Amazon prime day and love it!! It's especIially good for stairs! Previous to that we had a Dyson ball that had to be taken apart and unblocked every other use so I definitely wouldn't recommend one of those

Thanks - busy googling the specs of both of these! Looks like Shark have a sale on, which could swing it.

Sebo, nothing compares. You might want to read this thread before buying a Shark:

I have 2 Sharks and love them. I have had a Miele, Dyson (corded and cordless) and really not liked them. I've used a Henry at work. Hated it.

I bought a shark a year ago after years of using Dyson. The shark is amazing and still has great suction even a year later (unlike Dyson).

The powered lift away is great for stairs too.

Very much enjoying the "Ode" thread, Wandering.

I suspect with pretty much any vacuum cleaner it's partly a question of "have you bought a 'made on a Tuesday when the workforce were getting into the swing of the week but not yet jaded' model or a 'made on a Friday when everyone is just totally pissed off' model?" I bought a Miele on a friend's recommendation, and always found it over-rated and was somewhat underwhelmed by it (plus the bags are extortionately expensive and quite difficult to get hold of). Best vacuum I ever had was a really cheap cylinder model from a shop on the high street in the South London suburb where I lived when I had my first job - some random make I'd never heard of before or since.

Second the Sebo. Yes it has bags but they're easy to change and less messy than emptying a bagless one and the bags aren't expensive. We've had ours for 10 years and with three kids, two dogs and a cat it's great.

When you say killed do you know what the issue is? Fuse? Sometimes it is just that the brushes that power the motor have worn away. Youtube has easy to follow vids on repairs. I've repaired a dyson before this way.

Aha - that might be worth a look.

I (stupidly) fitted the bag incorrectly (moment of inattention, got a clip the wrong side of where it should have been), so the interior filled with dust and other shit which then got sucked through to the motor which is now making odd clunking and banging noises and overheating.

I might see if I can find a local repair service.

I bought a Shark lift away about a month ago to replace my Dyson cordless which is worse than useless as it no longer works on full power for more than 2 seconds without having to be returned to the charging unit. I am very impressed with the Shark so far.
