Neighbour smokes weed all the time

We have a neighbour who smokes weed all the time. They didn't used to, it seems to have started during lockdown. Or they have a new partner who now lives here and smokes. It's not clear. The weed smell comes into and completely fills our flat, and it lingers. It's incredibly strong, enough to give me a headache.

We have young children and the smell fills their rooms, so this has been stressing us out. We have mentioned this to the neighbour a few times, and each time they have said ok I won't do it inside again, but they continue to do so. It's becoming unbearable.

We are reluctant to get the police or some other authority involved (especially because this will need to be declared when we come to sell the flat) but will have to if it doesn't improve. Does anyone have any advice, either on how to get them to take us seriously and stop, or on the legal side of things (which authority to speak to, what the process is, etc.)?

Thank you.

I meant to ask if they are home owners or rent privately or are council tenants?

Can you ask them once more and then consider some sort of anonymous reporting of it? I understand because I hate the smell, it’s absolutely awful and so lingering.

The smell is not seeping through the walls. You need to seal up your house as you would to draught and mouse proof it. Check near pipes and around skirting boards. I found the smell of cigarette smoke was getting into my house from where pipes came up through the floorboards through a gap significantly bigger than the pipes. I just stuffed rags in to seal it and that did the trick. I don't think complaining to landlord/police would do a lot of good. You would be accusing someone of criminal activity rather than a civil nuisance. I doubt the police would be interested .

We're both home owners. Would the police really not be interested?

Police really won’t care about people smoking weed in their own home. I sympathise. It stinks. You can get companies that mouse proof houses so might be able to help block all the gaps as pp suggested.

Find out when the dealer usually visits, the police will be more interested in him or her. You have done the reasonable thing of asking nicely, they continue to support this activity which leads to criminality and harm to many young people and in developing countries.

If they drive they are also probably breaking the law when driving.

Unless they grow their own. In which case they should know about carbon filters and how to take care.

I'm not sure the dealer comes here. Don't most people meet dealers at street corners?

The police will already know the small time dealers in their local town
