New Year superstitions

I'm not very superstitious though I do ask Mr Magpie "whore's your missus" if I see a lone one! My mum always told me to have clean beds and empty bins to greet the new year. What are your superstitions?

Also saying "white rabbits" - no idea where that came from!

Not washing any clothes on New Years Day.

Apparently, if you do, someone will die.

I still do the "no laundry on New Years Day" one, even though I know it's a load of old nonsense and my washing basket is overflowing so I could really do with getting a couple of loads out of the way tomorrow. It would feel like tempting fate, especially in current circumstances.

I thought about this earlier - and then told myself it's just sexist claptrap to add to women's burden Grin. And how bad can 2021 be right?!

JumpLeadsForTwo · 31/12/2020 18:17

Good excuse not to. Can't have that on my conscience Grin

Sorry OP for jumping in with that on your thread!

My mum always had to have a clean house for Hogmanay- not sure if that was to do with the new year itself or the amount of visitors & first footers. How times have changed!

You can't sweep on NYD as you are sweeping all the good luck out of the door.

or something.
