What did you do with your wedding dress

Hi,

My DH doesn't understand why I want to keep my wedding dress but it's just something I want to do.

It got my wondering if other people kept there's and what they did with it

OP posts:

I gave mine to charity. I wasn't going to wear it again and I'm not a keeper of things

letsnotscaretheneighbours · 29/12/2020 21:01

Mine was made into a memory bear along with the waist coat from my husbands suit.

Haha - I often say to DH ‘oh look at that lovely dress - that’s my next wedding dress...’

And another thing - theres no way on gods green earth that I could ever get into it again!

spotlovesbedtime · 29/12/2020 21:03

Gave it to a charity that makes dresses/outfits for stillborn babies. Really moving article a few years ago and TV doc I think about a lady who makes them as she found it hard to find clothes to dress her stillborn baby in.

H1978 · 29/12/2020 21:11

Mine was sent abroad to a charity that give dresses to girls getting married from poor households.

TheNationsFavourite · 29/12/2020 21:15

Still got mine - it's a dark red silk corset, fishtail skirt and bolero jacket. Have worn various combinations to balls, parties etc.

Heyahun · 29/12/2020 21:16

I still wear mine !! It’s a short dress and not really a wedding style dress at all - though it is ivory colour!

Have worn it to 2 black tie events and a few parties over the last few years

Mine is carefully packed away in a ridiculously huge storage box under the spare bed. It’s moved house with us five times. We always complain about how much space it takes up, but I don’t want to get rid of it. I loved looking at my mum's wedding dress when I was planning our wedding, even though it wasn’t my style at all. I hope my DDs will enjoy the same with mine at some point. I’ve no expectation that either of them will want to wear it, but the option is there if they do. Also there’s yards and yards of fabric in it, so they could adapt it or use bits of it if they wanted to. It’s 13 years old now but the style hasn’t dated so far - my SIL wore one almost identical a year a half ago. I was irrationally peeved!

Lekky12 · 29/12/2020 21:25

I took mine to Australia when I emigrated, wore it on our 1st wedding anniversary and went swimming off an island on the barrier reef. Then I showered in it. Its now in a vacuum bag in a box! Raw silk, gorgeous material and I have 2 boys now! Maybe for the grandkids dolls!

LaBelleSauvage123 · 29/12/2020 21:26

Mine is in the wardrobe at my parents house with the mud still on the hem from the dancing we did in a field. Twenty year old mud 🙈

Muchtoomuchtodo · 29/12/2020 21:27

It’s up in the loft. Probably under a box of unused Christmas decorations or something!

ivegotdreadfulpmttoday · 29/12/2020 21:37

Oxf am

Ellieboolou33 · 29/12/2020 21:43

Sold mine for £500 6 months after I married, it was a Maggie sottero and sold via eBay in a day, this was 10 years ago and I'm still happily married.

I'm not very sentimental with stuff though.

caringcarer · 29/12/2020 22:09

In my wardrobe in a huge bag taking up loads of room. After I used it I suggested selling it on eBay but DH got all romantic and said I should keep it. How I wish I could still get into it though.

ParkheadParadise · 29/12/2020 22:13

I gave mine to a local charity that made first communion dresses for families that couldn't afford to buy one.
I was sent a picture of a little girl looking beautiful on her special day.

Rafflesway · 29/12/2020 22:25

Been married for almost 42 years! (Child bride of course Xmas Grin)

My dress was in the loft for many years. Then, when we moved house, I transferred it to the wardrobe in the guest room.

Finally decided it was taking up valuable space so placed it in one of those charity plastic bags which come through the door to be collected. Kept the veil though! 😁

ellenleaves · 29/12/2020 22:29

Sold it a month after getting married - got £800 and paid £1500 for it (including alterations). Selling it was the justification for spending over £1000 on it in the first place!

DigOutThoseLemonHandWipes · 29/12/2020 22:43

Mine is in a special acid free storage box under the spare bed. I periodically thinking about donating it to a still birth charity but I secretly live in hope of getting back to a size when I could wear it again ( not that I could wear it anywhere it is very definitely a wedding dress - but I'd love to try it on one last time).

Nomnomarrgh · 29/12/2020 23:34

Pretty sure ex-h chopped it up as he did with several of my uni books.

tigerbear · 29/12/2020 23:37

Mine held no sentimental value after divorcing exH, so gave mine away on a Facebook free stuff group. Felt nice to give it to someone who said she would never have afforded to get such a dress otherwise (was approx £2k new).

Blurp · 29/12/2020 23:41

Gave it to a charity shop (which had a bridal section). I loved it, but was never going to wear it again, so thought I'd rather see someone else get some use out of it!

Sheleg · 29/12/2020 23:42

Gave it back to my mum, from whom I'd borrowed it!

Clevererthanyou · 29/12/2020 23:43

Wore it a few times when my son went through a phase of enjoying dress up. If memory serves I was a very nice Queen, my husband was a wolf and my son was a knight.
Was it tradition to have your firstborns Christening gown made from your wedding dress or have I made that up? Confused

Onedropbeat · 29/12/2020 23:44

Sold it about 2 weeks later

No point keeping it in wardrobe or loft

DH was sad but I don’t plan on wearing it again
