What did you do with your wedding dress

Hi,

My DH doesn't understand why I want to keep my wedding dress but it's just something I want to do.

It got my wondering if other people kept there's and what they did with it

@Greencauliflowers: it took us 10 years so keep hanging on to that dress! All the best x

Veryverycalmnow · 29/12/2020 20:12

Donated it to a workshop and took part in the workshop, sewing things onto it etc.

Cookies47 · 29/12/2020 20:13

Donated it to a charity that turn them into baby clothes!
They're huge bulky things to hang on to - put it to some good! :)

You can donate them , and they are made into gowns for born sleeping babies .

NearlyTheHolidays2 · 29/12/2020 20:16

Burnt in a house fire. Very blessed to still have my husband and children though. 🙂

micc · 29/12/2020 20:17

I still have my prom dress and I dont know why Haha. It's at my mum and dads though thankfully so I dont have to deal with it in the way! I now have two DDs so I might hold onto it to see if they want it. It's still nice imo. Hopefully save a few Bob if they like it! I'll check back in 12 years!

VexingVixen · 29/12/2020 20:17

I got married in a black, column, evening style dress. Had it shortened into a LBD for a few parties I had coming up afterwards, then donated it to charity. Don't think I even kept it a year!

Blueuggboots · 29/12/2020 20:17

Sold my first one (never wore it) at a church clothing sale, second one I donated to oxfam, third one is upstairs in my wardrobe in the hope that I might get back in it one day as it's a "normal" dress I can wear for a party.

ChorleyFMcominginyourears · 29/12/2020 20:18

I did keep mine, but when I moved 10 years ago my MIL who was at the old house helping to load (i was at the new house unpacking) took it upon herself to throw it out, didn't realise for a few weeks and by then it was in the landfill!

Phillipa12 · 29/12/2020 20:19

After I divorced I donated mine to Oxfam.

MrsMoastyToasty · 29/12/2020 20:20

Mines at DM's house where it's been for 25 years. She also still has her own from 1960.

bruisedbutnotbeaten · 29/12/2020 20:21

Donated to Oxfam.

WildOrchids67 · 29/12/2020 20:23

I got divorced after a few years, but I still have my dress. It's currently in one of those plastic bags you suck all the air out of with the hoover. I feel like I spent too much on it to give it away but I don't feel I want to sell it, either. Might attack it with scissors for a Halloween costume at some point in the future.

EmmaStone · 29/12/2020 20:23

In the cupboard 17 years on. Most anniversaries I try it on and flounce around the room laughing (it's a bias cut dress and I've not massively changed shape, so an easy fit).

VenusClapTrap · 29/12/2020 20:35

Mine is carefully wrapped in acid-free tissue in a special storage box. I am very fond of it, and could still get into it on my last attempt. It’s quite unusual and so not typical of it’s time.

I also have my mother’s very 1960s wedding dress in its original box, and her veil - I wore her veil myself on my own wedding day.

Perhaps dd might like to wear one of the dresses one day. Perhaps not. But I hope she will treasure them as I do, and pass them on to the next generation.

Karatema · 29/12/2020 20:44

Still have mine; it's 40 years old. I have the unrealistic idea that one day I'll be able to wear it again for a blessing! Grin

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 29/12/2020 20:46

My sister had hers dyed and made into a ball gown (she used to go to loads of these and would have dresses made). Mum gave mine to a charity that send them to Africa.

rednsparkley · 29/12/2020 20:46

I sent mine to a charity shop, they flogged it on ebay. I didn't even like it so had no sentimental reason to keep it.

Elderflower14 · 29/12/2020 20:51

Mine is hanging in my wardrobe.. Ds2 godmother made his christening robe from the train of my dress and that's hanging in my wardrobe too!

BarryWhiteIsMyBrother · 29/12/2020 20:54

I wore it again and again - it's a colourful Ted Baker strapless dress.

NeedWineNow · 29/12/2020 20:55

It's in a dress cover in the loft. I always thought I could have it cut down to midi length and make it strapless - sort of 50's style.

Veil and shoes ( which were the most uncomfortable ones ever) went to the charity shop when we moved. My headdress which was pearls and quite delicate is in a box in the loft which some of our cards and the ribbon from the cake. 3 other brides have worn my headdress as their Something Borrowed and I'm pleased to say we're all with our husband's Smile

bruffin · 29/12/2020 20:56

Sold and bought a coalport figurine in a very similar dress

Oblomov20 · 29/12/2020 20:57

I kept it for years. Then sold it for £25.

rollinggreenhills · 29/12/2020 20:59

Mine is in a wardrobe at MIL's house. She very kindly said she'd store it as we don't really have much room.

FamilyOfAliens · 29/12/2020 21:00

Wasn’t there someone on here a few weeks ago who said she was planning to frame her dress in a box frame and hang it on the wall in her house?

I seem to remember most people thought it was a bit of an odd idea Grin
