Can anyone recommend a good book to help me learn how to play chess?

I used this one as a kid (much earlier than 1988) it’s good for explaining how things move etc, but honestly the best way to learn is to play people. Dd has started using a chess app with lessons, but she was not a beginner, but for the first time ever I had to really try to beat her.

I think the sites she’s been using is chess.com

This book explains things very well (I still use it from time to time).

I would also get an app to practice with. I've got a good one called chess.com which has tutorials, puzzles and you can play games against the computer or use it to play someone else.

If you can find the Quick Chess board game anywhere it is a great way to learn. All three of my children learnt using this set, you can start to play immediately and gradually build up your skills.
