Dog breeds are now a Middle Class indicator?

Or at least in my dcs school (private). We thought it was bad in September with all the new puppies on the school run... Mostly the same breeds poodle crosses (cockapoos, labradoodles) bichon friese crosses (cavachons, cavapoos etc)... Insta tells me Christmas has brought a whole new pack of fluffy things.
I said this during the lockdown that these particular breeds are now a status symbol & the new MC accessory. Although DH claims a land-rover is also needed to transport the fluffy dog. Friends agree they are also as these breeds tend to be non shed & hypoallergenic...
DC also want one in the worst way😢 We're refusing based on the fact that we don't want a dog type that's considered a status symbol in our area & they cost a bloody fortune.... They are irrestible though with gorgeous temperaments but out of our range unfortunately

Just had a quick browse on gumtree and found this ad

www.gumtree.com/p/dogs/cockapoo-for-sale/1393768320

I'm quite gobsmacked.

Oh@Randomtasks that's heartbreaking. Little mite.

bluebluezoo · 02/01/2021 14:13

@Randomtasks oh poor little mite. And the description is heartbreaking- selling because 17 year old they bought it for cba looking after it.

Great example for the poster who said you never see poo’s up for rehoming..

Random That makes me sooooo Angry TWATS!
Poor little pup...Sad

Lululatch · 02/01/2021 15:34

@bluebluezoo that was me.

That example is horrible and and example of terrible dog ownership. I suspect it would have happened if poos didn’t exist though. They should never have had any dog at all. It’s not the nature of the dog at only 4 months 🥲

Otellie · 02/01/2021 15:40

I can't believe the price of that dog. £2100? For a cross breed. Poor little sod. They clearly don't want it and they want their money back.

All because they bought it for their 17 old, who cannot be bothered to look after it!!! They haven't even followed up on his follow up vaccination!! How awful. Why dont they just give it to the dogs home instead of trying to sell it for £2,000!!! I want to send them a rude message, but I wont.

Kendodd · 03/01/2021 14:04

Well I'm very middle class and I think you can't beat a good old fashioned, can't identify and breed going on in there, mongrel. I did grow up working class though, maybe its showing in my choice of dog.

Kendodd · 03/01/2021 14:08

And I think some breeds of dogs very existence are living walking animal cruelty (bull dogs) the Kennel Club has a lot to answer for imo, making unhealthy deformities breed standards.

bluebluezoo · 03/01/2021 14:39

I do think the kennel club have recognised many of the issues and have introduced many measures to try and rectify it, including limiting litters and measuring inbreeding co-efficients.

Which brings me back to the “fashionable” crosses and breeds like pugs, bulldogs, dachshunds etc. Popularity means buyers don’t care about KC registration, they just want that cute puppy now. Enter the puppy farms and byb who, not constrained by the KC, can breed in bigger numbers yet sell for the same, if not more.

Couldn't agree more - I save my judgement for the owners of flat nosed dogs who can't breath and the overweight, fed a load of crap and under-exercised dogs. I rarely see a fat unhealthy looking cockapoo unlike labs.
