Dog breeds are now a Middle Class indicator?

Or at least in my dcs school (private). We thought it was bad in September with all the new puppies on the school run... Mostly the same breeds poodle crosses (cockapoos, labradoodles) bichon friese crosses (cavachons, cavapoos etc)... Insta tells me Christmas has brought a whole new pack of fluffy things.
I said this during the lockdown that these particular breeds are now a status symbol & the new MC accessory. Although DH claims a land-rover is also needed to transport the fluffy dog. Friends agree they are also as these breeds tend to be non shed & hypoallergenic...
DC also want one in the worst way😢 We're refusing based on the fact that we don't want a dog type that's considered a status symbol in our area & they cost a bloody fortune.... They are irrestible though with gorgeous temperaments but out of our range unfortunately

These threads are hilarious

Cockapoos are easy and sweet dogs and that is why they are popular. Yes some are crazy but that is usually because of moronic owners.

I agree that middle classes go for spaniels and other working breeds. Are cross breeds not a bit more chavvy now?!

Graciebobcat · 30/12/2020 10:53

Yes, I would be more wary with lurchers, though the ones I know I love to bits. Essentially they are also a mongrel and the rescues are not even sure what breed they've been crossed with half the time. Whereas with greyhounds if they have been fostered in a house first the rehoming place usually has a good sense of whether they might be able to live with a cat, or definitely not.

This thread is vile.
'Smart' people have labs or spaniels. Oh do bore off.
Who calls people 'new money or Nuevo-riche' these days?
I didn't realise there are still people who place so much value on 'class'. I would suggest that people who would do so are far more likely to be 'social climbers' than people who pick a poo type dog.

People who are really insecure.

MrsMiaWallis · 30/12/2020 10:58

@PattyPan

I actually find those types of dogs a bit nouveau riche. It’s tacky not to adopt.
Yes, they are a bit chavvy. A landy full of jack russell crosses and a long suffering Lab is what you need.
AliceMadHatter · 30/12/2020 10:58

@MacDuffsMuff

I don't understand some of the posters on this thread. Their comments suggest that they don't really like dogs, just their dog, which begs the question why did they get one in the first place. I prefer some types of dog over others of course, but if it's got fur and barks it's good with me. People refering to 'silly little dogs' etc is rude. I love big dogs, have always had big dogs etc but I wouldn't dream of slagging off someone else's. Dogs are the best in all their shapes and sizes.
Yes, I love all dogs.

I haven't got a poo breed but I know a couple and they are lovely.

It's a thread about dogs and class so...
Astella22 · 30/12/2020 11:14

@Fainasnowchild

Jesus, this is a really nasty thread.

There are some huge snobs on here.

Yes totally agree, just another excuse to feel superior and look down on people. If u got ur dog from a reputable breeder and the dog is happy/healthy then I don’t see it as an issue at all.
isittimetogotobed · 30/12/2020 11:34

I would think that including in this thread that the OPs children attend private school is more of an indicator of how they view 'class' than the dogs people have.
If you are always having to prove yourself by having the right dog/ car/ school/ career then you will never be happy.
Care less about what other people are doing and focus on what's good for you/ what you want. But the dog you want, send your kids where you want and live a life that is fulfilling for you.

AwaAnBileYerHeid · 30/12/2020 11:48

@heydoggee and some people might find it "horrible and wanky" following the 'in thing' of getting a rescue animal from abroad as opposed to rescuing many of the animals already in rescues at home.

If you're going to be rude about peoples choices to send their kids to private school (and no, I don't, however I don't think that there is anything wrong with spending money on education, plenty of people spend their money on tutors, private music lessons etc for their children) then do expect people to be rude back to you about your choices.

MacDuffsMuff · 30/12/2020 12:00

It's definitely cockerpoo, cockapoo is nonsensical and even more stupid and annoying.

@Graciebobcat A quick Google will show that it's definitely Cockapoo, not Cockerpoo (which I agree makes more sense). But it'll also show a Cockador, Cockadoodle etc which are pretty nonsensical names really. Either way, they're all lovely dogs, but I think all dogs are glorious anyway. 😊

My local rescue page is full of these poor dogs who have gone missing as soon as they've arrived in a home here. They've had a bad start, a long and arduous journey and some people just think that they can plonk them on their living room without a thought that the animal is probably terrified and may flee at the first opportunity.

TheDogsMother · 30/12/2020 12:04

Believe me, terriers are not a 'silly little breed'. They are usually a force to be reckoned with. When we first got our JRT I was given some very sound advice which was 'you will never train it, you will just come to an understanding' Grin. Sadly our lovely little bugger was PTS in April aged 15 so in order to have a dog fix, we walk both a Labradoodle and a Cockerpoo and they are both really lovely dogs. I can really see why both breeds would be very popular with families but when we are ready for our own dog again we will do our very best to get a rescue. Probably another terrier Shock.

YoniAndGuy · 30/12/2020 12:13

Cockerpoo, cockapoo, it's whatever you want it to be Grin

MrsMiaWallis · 30/12/2020 12:17

Nothing says ‘posh dog lover’ like a conversation with a chap in a shooting jacket about the merits of reviving rare native breeds

Marvellous!

As someone who lost their 14 year old JRT a couple of months back, this really resonates with me! She was never trained but we did all (humans and other dogs) come to an understanding. Mainly that her way was the best way Grin (luckily she was mostly a Very Good Dog).

TheDogsMother · 30/12/2020 12:40

@FestiveSocksRock Flowers. We have a Jack Russell shaped hole in our lives

TarnishedSilver · 30/12/2020 12:40

Is it only poos that deserve such hate or is it all crossbreeds?

FestiveSocksRock · 30/12/2020 12:48

Flowers back to you too @TheDogsMother

JRTs are definately a LOT of dog in a very small package. I don't know that we'll ever have the energy for one again - and we've got a springer!

I didn't choose her - she came as part of a package deal years ago - but she has ensured that I have a deep love of the breed and a real soft spot every time I see one out and about. I couldn't help but love and admire her, and all her fiesty gung-ho attitude to life. Not aggressive in the slightest, but also not one to suffer fools gladly. Loyal but never needy. Brave and kind and caring all at the same time. Barky right up until her last hours. Like I say, a LOT of dog in a very small body Grin

CaptainMyCaptain · 30/12/2020 12:59

I have heard a few bad things about rescues from abroad but our NDN has a Romanian rescue who is lovely and good natured although she does have a mind of her own. When she arrived we thought there might be fireworks between the new dog (who had survived the mean streets) and our feisty, territorial JRT but it was love at first sight.

CaptainMyCaptain · 30/12/2020 13:00

Glad to see all the JRT love on here.

Frenchdressing · 30/12/2020 13:08

MN would hate the walk I have just been ontogeny! Groups of women in bobble hats, Grensons and long duvet coats, a poo dog on one hand, a takeaway coffee in the other. Seriously there were loads of people like this. My little home town is becoming quite the MC suburb.

Frenchdressing · 30/12/2020 13:08

MacDuffsMuff · 30/12/2020 16:41

What a lovely post @FestiveSocksRock it's made me all teary!

SpornStar · 30/12/2020 17:06

@TheVanguardSix

I live rurally but don’t own a Range Rover. My dog is a (relatively rare) pedigree breed; not a gun dog or terrier. Do I need to move house or get a new dog?

Wait a minute. That's not allowed. You can't do that. Grin You can't tell us what you drive without telling us your dog breed! This isn't Guess Who? Pets Edition. Tell us the breed, then we can tell you whether or not you need to move to Milton Keynes or ditch the Chihuahua. Wink

Chow Chow.

Looking forward to finding out what I’ll be swapping him for or where I’ll be househunting. In the current market, I suspect moving house is going to be cheaper than buying a new dog!
