Dog breeds are now a Middle Class indicator?

Brightonbabe5 · 29/12/2020 10:24

Or at least in my dcs school (private). We thought it was bad in September with all the new puppies on the school run... Mostly the same breeds poodle crosses (cockapoos, labradoodles) bichon friese crosses (cavachons, cavapoos etc)... Insta tells me Christmas has brought a whole new pack of fluffy things.
I said this during the lockdown that these particular breeds are now a status symbol & the new MC accessory. Although DH claims a land-rover is also needed to transport the fluffy dog. Friends agree they are also as these breeds tend to be non shed & hypoallergenic...
DC also want one in the worst way😢 We're refusing based on the fact that we don't want a dog type that's considered a status symbol in our area & they cost a bloody fortune.... They are irrestible though with gorgeous temperaments but out of our range unfortunately

I can't imagine many poo crosses ending up in rescue while so many are clamouring to get them. They'll just be sold on or given away.

NeurologicallySpeaking · 31/12/2020 09:24

None of the dogs you mention are breeds. They are crosses, one step removed from a Heinz 57 mongrel.

If you can't adopt then for goodness sake get an actual breed with proper effort put into improving the genetics over years.

Yes sorry, by “rescue” i meant rehomed or otherwise relinquished. Usually gumtree or friends, and those that do make rescue are snapped up before they hit the adoption pages, so aren’t “seen” in rescue.

Get a Cairn Terrier, they are a pedigree that looks like a mongrel and doesn't shed. Also great with kids and are happy with a couple of half hour walks per day.

I'll second that, they are hardy little dogs, fantastic with children. They can tolerate short walks but can go for long walks with no problem too.

We lost our old girl a couple of years ago and now have a Golden Retriever who is beautiful.

We're hoping to get another cairn next year.

As long as the dog is looked after and exercised appropriately then nothing else matters.

@nuitdesetoiles

This thread is hysterical! I've only recently come back to Mumsnet after a loooooong hiatus...I feel better equipped to deal with the unpleasantness on it now, although it's less so than 13 years ago.

Why is everyone on the whole board so obsessed with being middle class?! Is this indicative of RL? I very rarely notice!

It's hilarious. Unfortunately I actually know a few people like this IRL. They spend far to much time and money keeping up with other people whilst looking down their noses at people who just live their life as they want to.

I'm just going to strut around the village for an hour with my Beagle and then wait till it's dark to take the mixed breed out.

Too much time

Smallgoon · 31/12/2020 11:46

Deary me I confused a miniature poodle with a toy poodle - how will the poodle expert in me ever live that down...? Hmm

In answer to the OP, yes it is hard not to see these 'poospan' (as MIL calls them) dogs as belonging to a certain type of people, don't need to specify class but certainly those who aspire to be 'fashionable'. MIL's cleaner breeds them in her backyard, a nice little earner and no doubt cash in hand, to satisfy the need for these dogs. It's vile and shouldn't be allowed.

How can your MIL bear to employee her? Disgusting individual (cleaner not your MIL!)

We met one out walking the other day, gorgeous dog. I'd never seen one before so I asked as she was so lovely. Can't say I mistook her for a mongrel though.

Wonder if the cleaner has a license? I'm sure you need one. Otherwise, yes, it shouldn't be allowed.
RosesforMama · 31/12/2020 13:50

Not even slightly interested in fashion. Got a cavalier mix as my mother had a cavalier who was incredibly lovely but suffered a number of health conditions and shed HUGELY. We wanted a lower shedding dog which would be healthier than the cavalier but hopefully have that sweetness. I do find it harder to understand what aspects of a cocker spaniel are desired in a cocker mix but I think cava mixes it's obvious. They are gorgeous, gorgeous dogs but suffer so many health problems.

You can tell in a young puppy if they are furnished or not and therefore likely to shed not at all, a little or very much.

RosesforMama · 31/12/2020 13:52

(and don't have Instagram..!)

YourNutsMeLord · 31/12/2020 14:12

@RosesforMama, yup I can see why Cavs are mixed. A real shame that breed is so riddled with the health issues because it is, otherwise, the perfect breed for 'typical' families looking for a sweet and easy going dog. Sadly, without cross breeding, I don't think the breed has enough healthy genetics to recover on its own.

I can also see why labradoodles came about: the lab bringing a physical and mental robustness that the poodle doesn't always have but that is necessary for a working aid dog like that (sorry poodles! I love you really).

I just don't understand the cocker poodle mix. They are such similar temperamented dogs, with many of the same strengths and weaknesses. That said, sprockers have been around since the two breeds seperated and they are both very similar breeds also...

Miniature poodles are also a breed in their own right, as are Toy and Standard. The main difference is size, but toys tend to be lighter build than mins and tend to a slightly shorter lifespan. In the past, toys tended to be a bit more highly strung due to the close breeding but over time this has lessened.

The mistake you should never make to a poodle owner is mixing one up with a Bichon Frise or vice versa! Grin

Brightonbabe5 · 31/12/2020 16:25

I love Bichon Frise! They are also popular on the school run or the bichon/ cavalier cross (cavachon), very friendly & fluffy!
Sil & bil have a 13 year old bichon & he's delightful.

@FloconDeNeige good choice! My dd (9) especially loves samoyeds.

We watch a family on YouTube called “life with malamutes” and they are a young couple who have got 2 malamutes, Phil (m) and Nico (f) and a Maine Coon cat called Milo. They also have a baby and recently they got a new puppy Malamute who is adorable. They must be up the wall.

It’s worth a watch, the dogs, cat ( and baby ) are all adorable Smile

FloconDeNeige · 01/01/2021 11:58

@Zoflorabore I’ve seen a video of that dog called Phil and the family trying to get him into the bath!

HeronLanyon · 01/01/2021 14:08

flocon thank you. I’ve just watched that. I was transfixed, despite everything else going on, by the adult dog in the corner. Absolutely hilarious.

HeronLanyon · 01/01/2021 14:09

Oops thanks zoflorabore

Zoflorabore · 01/01/2021 14:10

@FloconDeNeige brilliant! That’s one of my favourite episodes. So funny when he just sits and stares at the wallGrin

They’re beautiful dogs but the sheer size of them puts me off. I recall one episode where the man said Phil is over 100lb.

Zoflorabore · 01/01/2021 14:19

@HeronLanyon they’re amazing! We love watching them. They even do meet and greets ( pre-covid ) and my kids keep asking if we can go to the next one as they’re only about half an hour away it seems as we’re outskirts of Liverpool and they’re somewhere around Manchester.

You will be hooked Smile

RelightMyPfizer · 01/01/2021 17:17

I have 2 rehomed poos (neither from farms-I know where they both originally came from

One is a cockapoo (mum red working spaniel, dad apricot poodle)

The other is either a cockapoo-poo or a Poo-Poo-Cock
Dad was a red poodle, mum was a brown cockapoo, granny was a liver spaniel, grandad was a poodle. So three quarters poodle-very clever but jumps in the river and digs the lawn up, chases balls.
