Dog breeds are now a Middle Class indicator?

Or at least in my dcs school (private). We thought it was bad in September with all the new puppies on the school run... Mostly the same breeds poodle crosses (cockapoos, labradoodles) bichon friese crosses (cavachons, cavapoos etc)... Insta tells me Christmas has brought a whole new pack of fluffy things.
I said this during the lockdown that these particular breeds are now a status symbol & the new MC accessory. Although DH claims a land-rover is also needed to transport the fluffy dog. Friends agree they are also as these breeds tend to be non shed & hypoallergenic...
DC also want one in the worst way😢 We're refusing based on the fact that we don't want a dog type that's considered a status symbol in our area & they cost a bloody fortune.... They are irrestible though with gorgeous temperaments but out of our range unfortunately

I have a large pedigree dog, who seems to have a fondness for the fluffy little 'poos around the place. Where we are they like to tell you that the cocker part of their cockerpoo is a 'working cocker' to differentiate from the other riff raff - cue my DH, "Must be useful having the extra income"

@SD1978

I'd say nope. The poodle crosses is what everyone gets with a family, mainly without actually being aware that they can be bloody hard work. If is was going to 'judge' someone based on the dog breed- I'd probably look at a lab, spaniel or certain terriers as more of an indicator than all the poodle crosses now available. The Range Rover thing- it seems an aspiration to many (especially in white)! Would prefer a Land Rover any day as you can thrash that and know it's going to keep going!

White Range Rover = ultimate giveaway that someone isn't from an upper middle class family. They are lower middle class or working class who aspire to be upper middle but never will be

squiddybear · 29/12/2020 21:34

@OverByYer damn so not only have I not got the Range Rover but I also don't have any designer handbags or Botox.
I'm such a failure of a cockapoo owner

They're family have been at the farm on such a road for generations. Had our last two bitches from there, wouldn't go anywhere else'

They're = Their

Horrific grammar mistake! Blush

umpteennamechanges · 29/12/2020 21:39

TBF I find that Botox somewhat transcends class boundaries.

What's different is whether you talk about it and how much of it you have (although the latter point is less reliable than the former).

AliceMadHatter · 29/12/2020 21:42

According to my two dog breeds we are so vogue, very tacky, definitely middle class, must be working class. Basically I got two dogs I wanted and I am not a judgemental twat.

Brightonbabe5 · 29/12/2020 21:49

OP here, I didn't realise the thread would result 16 pages. I was just merely observing the dog trend in dc's school... Albeit we are in an urban area so the cockapoos & cavachons will suit the house sizes/lifestyles in our vicinity...
As I said in my original post I really like these dogs, it's the price I can't justify.
Also funnily enough reading through the thread the parents in dc's school with the fluffy dogs also sport the hunter wellies, barbour jackets & drive the range rover.. Totally unnecessary in our urban area... The "country" look is very much in fashion...

I have a miniature schnauzer and before that lab and a King Charles spaniel.

Am not sure what class this makes me

XingMing · 29/12/2020 21:54

Honestly. trust me here, most families really would not find a foxhound or a beagle easy to live with. They need a LOT of exercise, and their only other interests are food and sex.

XingMing · 29/12/2020 21:56

And chasing and killing small prey... that's just what they do for fun. Still want one?

RosesforMama · 29/12/2020 21:59

@OverByYer

Sick of the sight of cockerpoos, cavapoos, pugs and French bulldogs.

Same people who prize designer handbags and Botox.

Ha ha ha! Where the bloody hell do you live? I live up North (not Cheshire) and don't know anyone who owns a designer bag or who has had Botox. I do know about 5 families with cockapoos and one cavapoo though. Plus I see a load of them in our park. Never seen a single footballer's wife type in there. Mostly walked by middle aged people with older kids.
tinkiiev · 29/12/2020 22:03

I think you're being a bit snidey, tbh.

Blackberrycream · 29/12/2020 22:06

This thread is reading like a very strange Hyacinth Bucket like comedy. Some people try really very hard to put themselves above others. That shows ‘a distinct lack of class ‘ to quote a pp.
It’s been a really good read though. Comedy gold....

According to mumsnet though it’s impossible to spot good botox, so how would you know Grin

XingMing · 29/12/2020 22:13

It's been a good thread. I enjoyed it a lot, and thank you to the OP and all participants. But Labradors are big and smelly, but the nicest family dogs because they love you.

nevernotstruggling · 29/12/2020 22:14

I just really love dogs. All of them. If you have a dog I won't notice your Botox or filler.

OverByYer · 29/12/2020 22:16

@RosesforMama I live in a working class part of the uk but near a small town that is quite aspirational , in a Mrs Hinch kind of way.
We went to Cornwall in the Summer it was Cockerpoo central.

XingMing · 29/12/2020 22:31

I live in Cornwall and rarely see cavopoos, except in summer so I think they come with their families. They are very welcome.

minsmum · 29/12/2020 22:32

We are working class, drive a swift, the Fox hound takes up the whole back seat. When we went to the rescue he was the only dog they had that they said could live with cats. He is brilliant with our cats, every other cat he meets, loves all dogs and children has no prey drive and neutered so not interested in sex. Has about 90 minutes of exercise a day and is too clever.
We live in the London suburbs

Grin Yes! No one can properly describe the people they say hello to regularly at the park, they can only describe their dogs. If a crime was committed the police sketch artist would be able to draw an accurate rendering of 4-year-d Bob the Lab-Staffie cross who has the purple K9 harness and give a full history of Bob’s background a d temperament and vaguely sketch a male/female person wearing a blue/red coat at the end of the lead Grin

Disagree. Mine loves to walk but loves sleeping and cuddles. She is gorgeous and so loving and hasn't got a nasty side at all.
AliceMadHatter · 29/12/2020 22:34

Sex?

XingMing · 29/12/2020 22:37

And cockerpoos for that matter. But still welcome, especially next year. Bring all your dogs to Cornwall. Give them lovely walks. Eat well. Stay in pretty villages. Have fun.

AliceMadHatter · 29/12/2020 22:37

Oh and the Beagle is like a Mum to our Designer Mongrol.

NoSquirrels · 29/12/2020 22:38

@TheVanguardSix

Poo breeds are for people who think they're getting an 'easier' dog. Go big or go home, is my motto. Grin
Ooh. Love this. One day I’ll have a MASSIVE dog. One day.
