It’s that time of year again... the late Christmas present to our livers!

You may be thinking of doing Dry January to:

*detox a little after seasonal overindulgence, or
*help you cut down a bit generally, or
*help you start to get out of a harmful alcohol habit, or
*just be a bit healthier for a month...

It’s good for all of those things!

I find the MN DJ threads excellent for support, encouragement, sharing info,‘we’re in this together’ camaraderie, suggestions for grown up drinks, aversion techniques and just fun.

This is my fourth year of DJ and I swear it has made all the difference to me; it was so hard first time, but having succeeded I did dry June and October after that, and do so every year. It has broken my habit, banished the craving and reset my relationship with booze.

I won’t be finding DJ too difficult this year, but some will. Hopefully this thread will help.

Come climb aboard the wagon! 🙂☕️🧃

Morning all! We always do dry Jan and it certainly feels especially needed this year! I think it'll be a bit more of a challenge this year: lockdown glass of wine has been a bit part of our routine... Definitely needed in terms of my health and waistline at the mo though.

Our favourite replacements are Free Damm; decent tonic water; the belvoir (I think?) juniper & tonic. I do have some of those alcohol free gins too although tbh I'm not convinced they are worth the money.

bettydaviseyes1 · 01/01/2021 10:33

Can I join please? Becoming really disillusioned with the booze. 3 glasses of wine last night (not a lot for me) and I feel bloated, sick, acidy, groggy, slow, dry mouth - I could go on!

SuperPixie247 · 01/01/2021 10:34

Morning all! I would love to join please. I drink most nights and have done for a long time, usually to cope with stress but I am looking to get a handle on that. Also interested in the benefits it may bring to my skin.

Good luck all Brew

Morning, I would like to join please! I actually tipped out the last glass of cava in the bottle last night as I was going to bed so I wouldn't be tempted from today. I've had a shitter of a year, lost my beautiful DD and my Dad, and it's the first as a single parent so the alcohol crept up, mainly boredom during lock down. I then managed to stop drinking on my own, "inky with friends", but I was seeing friends a lot when we were allowed! It's crept up again in December. Good luck to all of us x

Plonque · 01/01/2021 10:50

Good morning and Happy New Year!

I had a couple of drinks last night and wished I hadn't almost immediately. I was very tired to begin with and they just made me so sleepy, I struggled like heck to stay awake after that.

He's to a much more wide awake January!
I haven't downloaded the DJ app, I've got one called Nomo cos I'm hopefully going to stay sober into February and beyond. It's free and gives you a day counter of your sobriety. There's all sorts of paid extras in there like live support and stuff but hey, that's what you lot are for and I'll perhaps look at those, as and when, but for now the free clock is what I want 🤗

HPLikecraft · 01/01/2021 10:52

Welcome all newcomers, of course you can join us!

Remember everyone, this is a support thread, so there is no judgement here whatsoever.
If you fall off the wagon don’t worry: we can give you a hand back on.
There need be no embarrassment about past drinking habits.
And if you’re struggling, come here and hopefully some of us will be around to encourage you and keep you on the right path.

Sign me up too! I am tired of being so 😴 tired!!

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 01/01/2021 10:59

I'm in! I drank way too much last night and tbh over the last few years my relationship with alcohol hasn't been good. I'm looking forward to losing the bloat I get after drinking.

Happy New Year, folks!

buzzofthebumblebee · 01/01/2021 11:14

I'm in too. Drinking far too much. Lost my Mum on Christmas Day and realise the gin & wine isn't the way to cope. Flowers to all of those who have lost loved ones too.

katmarie · 01/01/2021 11:37

I'm in if I may? My relationship with alcohol has become very unhealthy, dh is worried about me I know, and I have 2 kids that I want to do better for, as well as to set a better example, so I need a major reset. I need to lose a lot of weight, and stop spending so much money too, so this will be a good way to help those goals too. Best of luck everyone, its a cliche but today is the first day of the rest of our lives :)

laughoutquiet · 01/01/2021 11:52

I'm in.

I drink far too much and have put on a stone in the last year so it's DJ, exante shakes and some exercise!

OxanaVorontsova · 01/01/2021 11:54

I’m in

ZooeyS · 01/01/2021 11:58

I’m in. I did Dry Jan, Sept and Oct but have drunk almost every night (and waaaay too much) since Dec 1st. Decided on Dec 30th that I’ve had enough. My ambition is no alcohol in 2021, and possibly beyond

GreyMary23 · 01/01/2021 12:29

Happy to join! Been so greedy with food and booze over Christmas. Determined to do dry jan, eat better and get some of this excess weight off. It'll be hard though, I can't remember when I last went more than a week without a drink Blush

Sstarlight · 01/01/2021 12:32

I'm in!

I feel absolutely disgusting today, I desperately need to lose a stone, and my drinking has gotten daft this year thanks to lockdown boredom.

I did it last year and felt great.

TiddyTid · 01/01/2021 12:35

I'm in too. Cut down loads in the run up to NYE in preparation. Just had 2 wines last night and in bed by 11pm.

I'd like to carry it on past January as the older I get the less alcohol agrees with me Grin

FitzsFool · 01/01/2021 12:38

May I join you all please?
It's all becoming rather habitual rather than just recreational and I'm just not finding it that fun anymore.

ToastandJamandTea · 01/01/2021 12:39

Checking in with a nice cup of tea in hand.
I've been so greedy over December it's now just a habit and not even a desire to drink.

AldiIsla · 01/01/2021 12:43

Happy New Year!

I'll join you all if you don't mind.

I'm bored of drink. Never used to be a drinker, couple of times a year max. Every night now and I'm ashamed. I'm fat and bloated.

I need dry January as if someone else is having one I can't say no. I love wine. I might have a problem or I might have a bad habit. I'm hoping it'll be clearer to me after this.

NameChangeUnwiseAdvice · 01/01/2021 12:53

I need in please. I have such an unhealthy attitude to drink I really need to stop. Not to mention the amount I spend on it. I use if for everything - happy times, sad times, stressful times, celebrations and I feel like enough is enough. I'm hopefully going to try January but maybe more.

NameChangeUnwiseAdvice · 01/01/2021 12:54

@AldiIsla exactly the same as me. Problem or habit I've fallen into? Even the thought of not drinking is odd.

TeaRose29 · 01/01/2021 13:02

Feeling suitably grotty today Blush. Had cocktails and Champagne last night. Did any of it really taste that great? No.

I’m going to keep a journal (app-based but private) of my DJ, and post a photo of myslf on it every day, so that I can see how my appearance changes (assuming it does) during the month. Am hoping for some improvements 😬😬.

Am now enjoying a nice hot bath, and the TV, my knitting and a nice cup of tea await me. Good luck everyone, LET’S GO!!

Plonque · 01/01/2021 13:11

Which app @TeaRose29 ?
Sounds like a good idea.

PervyMuskrat · 01/01/2021 13:37

I’m in too. My drinking is terrifying me tbh, I need to lose weight and I spend way too much money on wine. I’m allowing myself one or two days off a month for special occasions but I’m aiming for 3 months off as I need to reset.

LarryUnderwood · 01/01/2021 13:44

@buzzofthebumblebee so sorry about your mum Flowers
I have a shocking hangover today, which was part of the plan. Wanted to kick off my first DJ day properly motivated to never feel like this again! Have downloaded the app, and feeling determined Brew
