DRY JANUARY 2021! This way please... all welcome

It’s that time of year again... the late Christmas present to our livers!

You may be thinking of doing Dry January to:

*detox a little after seasonal overindulgence, or
*help you cut down a bit generally, or
*help you start to get out of a harmful alcohol habit, or
*just be a bit healthier for a month...

It’s good for all of those things!

I find the MN DJ threads excellent for support, encouragement, sharing info,‘we’re in this together’ camaraderie, suggestions for grown up drinks, aversion techniques and just fun.

This is my fourth year of DJ and I swear it has made all the difference to me; it was so hard first time, but having succeeded I did dry June and October after that, and do so every year. It has broken my habit, banished the craving and reset my relationship with booze.

I won’t be finding DJ too difficult this year, but some will. Hopefully this thread will help.

Come climb aboard the wagon! 🙂☕️🧃

I’m in too. Will have some fizz tonight to celebrate the end of 2020Wink and then crack on with DJ 2021. Turn the disappointment of pubs and restos being closed to our advantage Smile

HPLikecraft · 31/12/2020 12:46

Good to see all the newcomers. More people means more mutual support.Smile

Yes@TeaRose29 last year's thread was very helpful. All that talk of fatty liver was very sobering... literally!

Hi, I'd like to join too. I was in two minds as we have another five weeks of lock down and it is depressing enough without wine lol. But it really is the best thing to break the habit and I even download an app to keep me motivated. This thread will always help.

I’d like to join too... overindulged waaayyyy too much over Xmas, hic...

ritzbiscuits · 31/12/2020 13:54

Yes I'm joining too. Have previously done 18 months alcohol free, but have slipped back into regular drinking this year.

I'm doing Dry January along with Yoga with Adriene's 30 days of yoga (will realistically do 3/4 times per week) and am aiming for 24 books in 2021. Not drinking will allow me to read more and make a good start to total too.

Cbeebiesismyworld · 31/12/2020 14:05

I’m in. I’ve never done it before and usually struggle to achieve 3 days alcohol free in a row, but I need a break and would love to lose a few pounds. Bring it on!

clevername · 31/12/2020 15:25

I'd love to join, too, please? I've never done it before but I've recently started to feel like I could do with a bit of a break and thought this would be a good way of going about it.

I'm hoping that a break from alcohol will improve my energy levels, mood and the bags under my eyes. Grin.

Looking forward to my bottle of champagne tonight though Wink...

HPLikecraft · 31/12/2020 17:18

Have a good evening, everyone! I'm certainly going to enjoy a glass or two of fizz tonight.

See you tomorrow for a nice dry Jan 1st... and a healthier new year. Last time I'll use these for a while...🥂🍾

I am joining too please, both my parents have an unhealthy relationship with alcohol, so I am careful, but have definitely overindulged this Christmas x

HPLikecraft · 31/12/2020 17:40

@SunscreenCentral which app are you using? Do you recommend it?

Checking in. Last year was the first year in ages when I haven’t done DJ, due to an unusual set of circumstances but I want to do it again, if only because I’ve got about ten lockdown pounds to lose before my clothes become comfortable again, and wine contains a lot of excess calories.

Unfortunately that means I need to stay off the delicious Bavarian 0% Weissbier as well, and stick to fizzy water and herbal tea, though I did pick up a tempting bottle of Belvoir ginandtonicalike at the supermarket.

ThePenIsBlue · 31/12/2020 21:00

I would like to join. I am not in a good place atm at all, and booze definitely makes it worse. I gave up for 2 weeks in the summer and after about 10
Days I felt amazing. Sleeping better, more energy. But once I start again I can’t stop.

Frownette · 31/12/2020 21:20

I'm in, I've started with tea already.

I've got too much to do in January and need to be focussed Smile

EastofEdna · 31/12/2020 22:27

I’m in. looking forward to a sleep at the weekend that isn’t fuelled by alcohol. I used to be able to go months without a drink until (the dreaded word) lockdown when it became the only way to differentiate between a weekday and the weekend. I have made lots of plans for January - I am going to start running again.

Let’s go!

AprilDaffodils · 31/12/2020 23:33

I'll join you. Sitting here with my last gin and tonic of the year. Like many others, my drinking has increased steadily in lockdown until it is now at a point where I think I've had a drink most nights in December. Really need a reset and if I can carry on past January I'd love that. (I've done dry Jan the past few years and always say that, but never managed it). Downloaded the dry jan app. I've let myself go on the eating front this year too and I'm the heaviest I've ever been, so hope this will help, along with some healthier eating.
Bit concerned for DH as he's a social drinker, never drinks on his own, and in past Januarys when I've been dry he's gone off to the pub to meet friends, but obviously now he's going to lose his only drinking buddy: me (Tier 4 for ages). He's being very supportive though, which is good.
As a PP said, let's do this!

dudsville · 01/01/2021 04:40

Day 1 for me! Anyone else have a tonne of alcohol in the cupboards? I don't mind. I don't tend to be impulsive so the presence of it doesn't make it harder for me, but it is weird.Good luck everyone!

user1483387154 · 01/01/2021 05:26

I'm in. First time for me, have tried several times this year to stop and obviously not made it.

Thebeachismyhappyplace · 01/01/2021 06:42

I'm in! I did 100 days in lockdown, started with a week, which became a month... and then the 100 day challenge. I felt amazing, have reset my relationship with the wine witch but during a really stressful month old habits kicked in and I am so ashamed that I've had no willpower. But as a lifelong insomniac the best benefit of my 100 days was totally being able to sleep. Every night. I have not slept a full night for weeks so I really need this.

But DH loves a glass, we have always cooked together and paired wines... and after 4 months of slow but steady increases I have not been able to start my day 1. But here I am. Heavier than ever and want DJ to be the start of a major reset.

Thanks for the thread OP Smile

10littlepirates · 01/01/2021 06:48

I'm joining too - for the first time! Definitely need a reset after a steady increase during lockdown and actually looking forward to it. Starting with a slightly fuzzy head due to yesterday's champagne - I won't miss that feeling! A fresh start today.

angorarabbit · 01/01/2021 09:08

Here's to a new start Smile

Hepzibar · 01/01/2021 09:32

I have never wanted to do it (because I didn't think I could).
I drink far too much and need to loose weight - and think about my health - plenty of reasons to stop.
I'm in

Baileyscoffeeandcampfires · 01/01/2021 09:43

I'm in

We polished off 3 bottles of fizz between 2 of us between 3pm and midnight . That's not good for the bank balance, waistline or liver . Dcs are in their late teens so they joined in on cider

Should I change my username as too much of a reminder ?

chuffedasbuttons · 01/01/2021 09:57

@Plonque that's what I drink Grin

chuffedasbuttons · 01/01/2021 09:59

Oops hit wrong button.
Thanks Plonque. One week target seems infinitely more achievable than one month

I'm going to try really hard. Let's see if I can show my face in a week.

HPLikecraft · 01/01/2021 10:09

Morning all! Happy new year.

God I drank some horrible wine last night, and too much of it. Glad not to drink for a while.

So... we start today. Good luck everyone ☕️
