Well, I played it - I have the vinyl single. It's better on vinyl. It also gets played on the Now channel as part of the Xmas thing.
But it was no 1 for seven weeks and the best-selling record of all time back then. Thing is, any slow record number one for that long and people just go off it, it becomes repellent. Wet Wet Wet's Love is All Around was a bit like that, as was Bryan Adams' Everything I Do and maybe Whitney's I Will Always Love You.
But songs like Frankie's Two Tribes - no 1 for nine weeks I think in summer of 84 - are fast, furious fun and not in the same category.
I don't deny Mul of Kintyre's dirge-like qualities.
The problem with Xmas records is that actually, from now til the rest of our days we will have just under two months hearing the same bloody songs incessantly, on a loop. No other season is like that. When I was a teen, there wasn't the same industry devoted to it, we hadn't had most of these Christmas records. They're good, but still...
