If Mull of Kintyre was a Xmas no 1, how come it never gets played at Xmas?

or am I just listening to the wrong stations?
I've only just discovered that it was number one in Xmas 1977, I think.

Ah - Paul Mc Cartney was a talented young man - the Beatles. I think after that some off his stuff was just not not as good. So Mull of Kintyre - well if he were a new musician - would they ever have played it ?

GellerYeller · 28/12/2020 16:28

And where's the love for Pipes of Peace these days? That had a very festive theme!

Callipygion · 28/12/2020 16:36

I love Mull of Kintyre, perhaps it’s more Hogmanay than Christmas though?

I'm in the 'because it's dirge / shit' camp. Awful song.

purrswhileheeats · 28/12/2020 16:41

What about Bob the Builder?

nicky2512 · 28/12/2020 16:44

My Ds was born on Christmas morning 2005. For a few weeks before Christmas that year I got completely obsessed with Mull of Kintyre. Even 3 year old dd noticed. Dh still laughs about it. No idea why but I just was compelled to play it and to watch the video on all the Sky Christmas music channels.
It made me feel v emotional and many a tear was shed. It was last thing I listened to before going to bed (and going into labour!).
It was obvious hormone related as I haven’t felt the need since!

The truth is Paul McCartney was always awful at songwriting. His little bit in A Day in the Life sums up his contribution for me. Ruined a brilliant song.

Rockbird · 28/12/2020 16:46

Because it's absolute shite (to echo everyone else on here!).

Thinking about it, I haven't heard Slade much either this year. It's all Wham and the Pogues. And bloody Mariah sodding Carey.

BasiliskStare · 28/12/2020 16:52

If that song means something to someone - that is great - but after the Beatles I do think Paul Mc Cartney should have left it alone and retired - so e.g. his painting - yes yes you are rich and famous - but - not brilliant other than that - Wings? He has a platform though & yes in the 60s he was fabulous as part of a band ( though it never stops amusing me - that Ringo Starr wasn't ever the best drummer ever - he wasn't even the best drummer in the Beatles - I think that was a quotation )

NewspaperTaxis · 28/12/2020 16:54

Well, I played it - I have the vinyl single. It's better on vinyl. It also gets played on the Now channel as part of the Xmas thing.

But it was no 1 for seven weeks and the best-selling record of all time back then. Thing is, any slow record number one for that long and people just go off it, it becomes repellent. Wet Wet Wet's Love is All Around was a bit like that, as was Bryan Adams' Everything I Do and maybe Whitney's I Will Always Love You.

But songs like Frankie's Two Tribes - no 1 for nine weeks I think in summer of 84 - are fast, furious fun and not in the same category.

I don't deny Mul of Kintyre's dirge-like qualities.

The problem with Xmas records is that actually, from now til the rest of our days we will have just under two months hearing the same bloody songs incessantly, on a loop. No other season is like that. When I was a teen, there wasn't the same industry devoted to it, we hadn't had most of these Christmas records. They're good, but still...

VettiyaIruken · 28/12/2020 16:55

Because it's absolute shite.

SantasBritchesSpelleas · 28/12/2020 16:55

I love Mull of Kintyre though I can take or leave Macca generally.

You never hear his other Christmas epic, The Frog Song, either. That really is shite though.

ManWithARash · 28/12/2020 17:02

It's still the 4th best selling single in the UK behind Candle in the wind, Do they know it's Xmas and Bohemian rhapsody ... so the second biggest if you ignore the charity songs.

Shock - I don't know a single person who listens to it - but - hey - more my problem than Macca Grin

JimmyTheWeed · 28/12/2020 18:00

Probably because it's not very Christmasy possibly also because it's a dirge

Holothane · 28/12/2020 18:03

It’s crap that why.

ReceptacleForTheRespectable · 28/12/2020 18:04

It's shit. Total drivel.

ReceptacleForTheRespectable · 28/12/2020 18:06

Also, there are LOADS of Xmas number ones that aren't played at Xmas because they're not particularly Christmassy.

This isn't fair.... Yesterday and Hey Jude are hardly crap, are they?
JingleJohnsJulie · 28/12/2020 18:15

It's a truly awful song, that's probably why.

Holothane · 28/12/2020 18:38

I loathe hey Jude it goes on and on and on, now Yesterday is a fantastic song.

user1471565182 · 28/12/2020 18:44

Yesterday and Hey Jude especially are well worn chord progressions that songwriters know are easy to get a reaction with. Look at the hype over that bloody 'let it go' tune. Same chord progression nearly.

Floralnomad · 28/12/2020 18:46

Because it’s total crap and there are 2 other completely crap Paul McCartney songs that are already played as Christmas songs and that is 2 too many without adding a 3rd .

SycamoreGap · 28/12/2020 18:46

Because nobody wants to listen to it...

ItsIgginningtolookalotlikeXmas · 28/12/2020 18:49

I love it Blush
