Name on cheque

FIL kindly gave me a cheque for Christmas. But he's written it out to a shortened version of my first name. Think Becky instead of Rebecca for example.
Will the bank accept it or do I need to ask him to change it or write another?

Becky is a well known version of Rebecca. I can’t see it being refused. You can call your bank/queue up to pop in to check, or just ask him to rewrite.

SoupDragon · 27/12/2020 17:43

They may well refuse it. My bank used to sometimes refuse cheques made out to my middle name (which I use all the time) even though it was included in the account name.

Snozzlemaid · 27/12/2020 17:43

Thanks. Becky was an example and the shortened version I use of my name is very similar to the full name so fingers crossed then.
I'll go into my bank this week and give it a go.

I’d give it a go but I think they will reject it - for thirty years I paid in cheques with a shortened version of my name, but then a few years ago when I tried the counter staff at the bank rejected it. Perhaps try on the machines as opposed to a human?

notangelinajolie · 27/12/2020 17:47

Pay it in at the cash till. My mum always used to write my middle name on my birthday cheque (which is the name she always called me) and it always cleared.

LubaLuca · 27/12/2020 17:49

Most banks will allow cheques to be paid in through their app - do you use one? It will be a quicker way to find out if it's going to be rejected, but I doubt it would be. It will be fine Smile

Do you have a banking app on your phone? Ours with Barclays has a feature where you can pay cheques in by scanning it.

soanco68 · 27/12/2020 18:05

I am called by my second name and have all sorts of combos of first Name only, second name only, the full name. All get accepted with no queries

grandmasterstitch · 27/12/2020 18:32

I've managed to pay an unsigned cheque in so I doubt it'll matter. I would try on the app first if you can

Snozzlemaid · 27/12/2020 18:42

Thanks all. It's too much to pay in on the app so I'll have to go into the bank.
Sounds like it's a bit hit and miss so I guess I'll give it a go and see what happens.

I had exactly this recently. It wasn't a problem that it was in a shortened version of my name

RNBrie · 27/12/2020 18:59

My in laws won't accept i didn't change my name when I married their son and every now and again I get a birthday cheque always made out to my married name. I pay it into the joint account and it's always been accepted.

Snozzlemaid · 27/12/2020 19:27

Dp and me have never married and FIL checked with dp what surname I use. Don't know if he thought I used dp's name for some reason.
So he got that right but then got my first name wrong after all.
