Bulb to use with Alexa

StorageBasket · 27/12/2020 13:55

DS has some Christmas money and wishes to buy a bulb for his bedroom light so he can turn the light off by asking Alexa.

I've seen the advert, I understand the principle, but a Google and Amazon browse have left me very confused.

You seem to use a phone app rather than an Alexa for many of them. He doesn't have a phone.

Has anyone done this and can recommend a particular Alexa bulb? He has £30 or so.

Thank you.

We use Philips Hue. The app is easy, you can set it up with Alexa . We can do some really cool stuff at Halloween as well with the app Grin

We have the hive bulbs. DCs use their Alexa to turn lights on/off whereas I use my phone app.

We have hive, but I think you need a home hub.

Once it’s all hooked up and on the app, you can add it in Alexa and use voice controls.

We have a bulb but the light from it is a bit naff - nasty white light. I also have a few plugs and they are much more useful. Here is one: smart plug

You only need the phone (or tablet) for initial setting up. I have an old Android phone in the house (no SIM) that I use. Once the plug is linked, the phone goes back in the drawer and the light is all controlled via voice through the Dot (or Echo) device.

DS has got this. DH set it up through the Alexa app however DS (who doesn't have a phone) then just controls with Alexa and loves it.

We have Phillips hue, they need setting up on the app. Once they are set up though you can control them through Alexa.
