Little things for the house that make life easier - I’m doing a shop

Right. I’m getting my act together. As I once again realised we’d run out of little clippy things for reasealing food packaging, it also occurs to me I keep meaning to buy an extra long iPhone cable so I can use my phone when it’s charging in the living room (I can rest it on the table but can’t look at it while sat on the sofa which is pissing irritating and means I’m constantly on 3% battery). I do try and avoid amazon so as not to help Jeff Bezos and his sickening wealth but sod it, I’m going to sit down this afternoon and do an Amazon shop for all those little things that make life easier but I never get around to buying. Basically all the stuff my mum used to go to Woolies for when I was little Sad (RIP Woolies, gone but not forgotten)

So far my list is:
Kitchen clips
Extra long iPhone cable
Lighters - if I can buy them online? (I don’t smoke but I’m a candle obsessive and I am always running out of long matches)
An oven liner, threw mine away a couple of months ago as it was rank and now I need to clean the oven base instead which is much harder than running the liner through the dishwasher - sigh

Please could you suggest other things I need but can’t think of right this second? Much appreciated Grin

Thanks for that tip about baubles, Oldraver - I have a box similar to that which was on it's way to the charity shop as my craft supplies outgrew it.

Why didn't I think of it for decorations? Ideal.

@Dora26

Where do you buy oven liners?
I've got these ones, they are hand wash only but easy to clean and have lasted for ages www.coopersofstortford.co.uk/pack-of-2-copper-oven-liners/?SKU=11252&src=gbase&vsrc=IGB9B2

I’ve ordered a rack today to keep chopping boards standing upright in the cupboard. If it’s good I’m going to get another one for baking trays too.

One of those clear plastic over the door hanging shoe organisers, I hang it on the inside of the door in the cleaning cupboard (bathroom works too) and store everything from cleaning stuff to smaller items. So easy to find everything and doesn’t take up any space.

I got mine from Home Bargains.

A man that does everything for you around the house!

scoobydoo1971 · 27/12/2020 17:08

Motion detector light if switch points are not by doorways...absolute essential in my house wandering around at night...

LH1987 · 27/12/2020 17:10

Robot vacuum, it is quite a luxury but totally worth it. It just runs around the house hoovering and I love it (possibly more than my husband 😀).

HeronLanyon · 27/12/2020 17:17

classicbrunette can you post a link ? I (and many of us no doubt) have been trying to track one of those down for ages !!

Mmmmdanone · 27/12/2020 17:21

Just bought a usb lighter on Amazon! Can't wait to try it out!

NotJustACigar · 27/12/2020 17:22

I love:

  • my 3-tier fruit bowl from Amazon. It stores all my fruit and saves space too.
  • my dustpan and rubber brush for cleaning the stairs (it gets the pet hair and cat litter the shark can't reach)
  • my immersion blender with mini chopper for those little jobs where I doubt want to get the whole magimix dirty
  • my mini plastic scraper to get the last little bits out of jars

I’ve bought a lazy Susan for the cupboard, love it for the bottles of soy sauce, vinegars etc

Loving this thread. Has anyone got any bright ideas or recommendations for recycling bins? I currently have a pull out bin that is integrated into the kitchen. Its basically two deep tubs that come out on a runner. I use one for food waste and one for recycling. I have a normal kitchen bin for refuse. The in cupboard bins have absolutely had it and I need to replace them. I don't want another in cupboard solution as I could really do with the cupboard space.

would a dual section bin like this one work, and then a food waste caddy to put on the worktop?

TakeMeToYourLiar · 27/12/2020 17:48

Ooh thanks for the ideas. Writing a shopping list!

Mine:

Swiss Army knife - it lives in my changing bag and comes in handy. Not so much the knife, but the magnifying glass, tweezers, toothpick, scissors and screwdriver

First aid kit - very small one in changing bag. Super handy if little one gets a small graze or I get a headache out etc.

Lightbulbs - I always have one spare for each light. As soon as I get down to 1, I order another. When they arrive I write on the box in sharpie which room they are for. Saved us on Xmas day when the dining room and kitchen lights went!

Robot vacuum- keeps floors clear and encourages me to tidy up each evening

Alexa and associated plug sockets. Means 4 year old can go round the house on his own when it's dark.

Where do you buy oven liners?
I got mine from Lakeland but Sainsbury's and Poundland also sell them.

Best Buy this pandemic was baking tray liners and dough lifter. The former quite pricey but both items worth it. Both Lakeland.

@VinylDetective

Mat to go under pet bowls

Don’t bother. Ours got completely disgusting and was a lot harder to clean than giving the floor a quick wipe. It went in the bin.

I stand mine in a melamine tray, and just wash it in the sink.
CarbsAreNotMyFriend · 27/12/2020 18:27

We have bought a few packs of these hooks and they are great - they actually stay stuck and don't fall off the wall. We have them inside wardrobe doors for robes/hoodies, back of bathroom doors for hanging wet towels, in the kitchen for hand towels & dish towels, kids rooms for bits & bobs, utility room for peg bags etc. Love them!

Scalpel handle with 10a non sterile blades.
Old school graphic designer here but seriously don’t know how our household would function without it

I am obsessed with my Water Pik tooth flosser

HyacynthBucket · 27/12/2020 18:43

Extra light bulbs and batteries. And stamps (the price of first and second class is going up in January).

QueenPawPaws · 27/12/2020 18:47

@CarbsAreNotMyFriend second those hooks! I hang belts on them too, have one inside the wardrobe and they're really sturdy
