Little things for the house that make life easier - I’m doing a shop

Right. I’m getting my act together. As I once again realised we’d run out of little clippy things for reasealing food packaging, it also occurs to me I keep meaning to buy an extra long iPhone cable so I can use my phone when it’s charging in the living room (I can rest it on the table but can’t look at it while sat on the sofa which is pissing irritating and means I’m constantly on 3% battery). I do try and avoid amazon so as not to help Jeff Bezos and his sickening wealth but sod it, I’m going to sit down this afternoon and do an Amazon shop for all those little things that make life easier but I never get around to buying. Basically all the stuff my mum used to go to Woolies for when I was little Sad (RIP Woolies, gone but not forgotten)

So far my list is:
Kitchen clips
Extra long iPhone cable
Lighters - if I can buy them online? (I don’t smoke but I’m a candle obsessive and I am always running out of long matches)
An oven liner, threw mine away a couple of months ago as it was rank and now I need to clean the oven base instead which is much harder than running the liner through the dishwasher - sigh

Please could you suggest other things I need but can’t think of right this second? Much appreciated Grin

Eufy lights for the stairs or bathrooms etc. 18 quid for 3 - if Gen 2 you can select the light level. You can test positioning using blue tack for optimal efficiency.

I have gas lighters for candles which are really long so I can light candles in the bottom of jars. They say they’re refillable but I’ve been using the first one from a pack of three for the last 18 months and it hasn’t run out yet. I use it all the time. www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07MYC63ZC/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?psc=1&ie=UTF8&tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-21

Also, a torch hat. It’s my new favourite thing. Everything constantly being shut means I’m doing a lot more walking and it’s ideal for walking near me where the street lighting is a bit sporadic. www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07W66CN76/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?psc=1&ie=UTF8&tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-21

those green bags to put your fruit and veg in to stop stuff going off too quickly - stay fresh I think they're called

@Bloodybridget

I don't get using clothes pegs to close bags, they don't actually seal them, so if the bag tips over or you want to keep something airtight they're no use, surely?
I have wanted a non-slip tray for quite some time - bringing several hot drinks upstairs from our basement kitchen feels tricky these days.

It’s not hard, you twist the bag squeezing the air out and peg it in one corner. I’ve never had a spillage and everything is airtight.

Beeswax covers, they are so good for covering food and drinks.

If you dislike Amazon try Lakeland ( plastics ) instead. Most of the items on your list will be found there. A big plus , is there customer service is excellent .

It hasn't been called plastics in years. Customer service is excellent.

@Redcrayons

I bought this from Morrison's last year, for the bigger decorations I use plastic boxes

Ooh, must be the time of year for it, I ordered spaghetti spork, spaghetti jar, and extra crockery yesterday because I'm so sick of chipped cups/plates.

Oh, oh, also these will solve all your hot fingered toast retrieval woes:

I also need some kind of nice metal bin about 40cm high for putting bathroom cleaning stuff in - loo brush and cleaning stuff. Any ideas, anyone?! I found old tin hat boxes were nice, but not quite tall enough.

One year (the year of the motion sensor lights!) I bought magnetic cupboard lights - brilliant for wardrobes etc
Also motion garden lights for outside kitchen door.
Also small motion lamps for top landing.
All for elderly mum but then bought for myself also ! Really useful in satisfying small way.

I do try and avoid amazon so as not to help Jeff Bezos and his sickening wealth

55% of stuff on Amazon is sold by independant sellers.
Like me- I work full time making and selling on Amazon.
I pay tax, it pays my mortgage, I spend my earnings locally too.
It doesn;t all go to Bezos.

Agree, I use amazon all the time. COVID has effected lots of people who have been able to find jobs either selling through amazon or working for them. We’ve had a number of new drivers, one was a lovely man in his late 50s I got chatting to, he was self employed and not been able to work with COVID, but has been able to take a job with amazon using his van.

Mat to go under pet bowls

Don’t bother. Ours got completely disgusting and was a lot harder to clean than giving the floor a quick wipe. It went in the bin.

We always used a cheap plastic tray from the Pound Shop for cat bowls, the raised edges stopped mess spreading all over the floor.

Echo dot and an adaptive plug. In bed i just tell alexa to turn my bedside light on and off. Its on a chest of drawers not on a bedside drawer unit. It means i am not forever knocking over my glass of water, or glasses, book etc searching for the light switch in the dark.

Hi
Dryer balls for the tumble dryer. Game changer for plump soft sheets and towels, and it takes less time.

Oh and for anyone who wears glasses and struggles to put make up on, Amazon sell one lens glasses that you flip from side to side so you can at least ensure your eyeliner is straight and mascara is neatly applied.

I need a new carving knife. Oh and if you've got pets, a bag to put all the bedding/ towels etc in before it goes in the washing machine. Brilliant. Can put it in the tumble dryer too, the turn it inside out and shake out the fur. Genius.

This! As well as the staff that work for Amazon.
They have an excellent business model, IMO. I would like to see ALL the worlds’ wealthiest people gain a social conscience but alas I fear that will never happen.
If you want to buy from Amazon, then do so.

Remote control socket switches. Like these www.amazon.co.uk/Programmable-Electrical-Household-Appliances-Operating/dp/B07QVP6Y9P/ref=asc_df_B07QVP6Y9P/?hvlocphy=9045909&linkCode=df0&psc=1&hvnetw=g&hvadid=394317030617&hvdev=c&hvtargid=pla-896080837167&hvrand=10356648457662003644&adgrpid=80755971054&tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-21 I bought them last year as we havelptsof sets of fairy lights at Christmas dotted aroudnthe house and this means you can turn them all off in one go.
