Little things for the house that make life easier - I’m doing a shop

Right. I’m getting my act together. As I once again realised we’d run out of little clippy things for reasealing food packaging, it also occurs to me I keep meaning to buy an extra long iPhone cable so I can use my phone when it’s charging in the living room (I can rest it on the table but can’t look at it while sat on the sofa which is pissing irritating and means I’m constantly on 3% battery). I do try and avoid amazon so as not to help Jeff Bezos and his sickening wealth but sod it, I’m going to sit down this afternoon and do an Amazon shop for all those little things that make life easier but I never get around to buying. Basically all the stuff my mum used to go to Woolies for when I was little Sad (RIP Woolies, gone but not forgotten)

So far my list is:
Kitchen clips
Extra long iPhone cable
Lighters - if I can buy them online? (I don’t smoke but I’m a candle obsessive and I am always running out of long matches)
An oven liner, threw mine away a couple of months ago as it was rank and now I need to clean the oven base instead which is much harder than running the liner through the dishwasher - sigh

Please could you suggest other things I need but can’t think of right this second? Much appreciated Grin

Oh my gods, I’ve been busy with the baby and dinner and now come back to all this. Are you guys trying to bankrupt me 😂

Yes I think the dual bin would be a good option. Having the food waste bit seperate is probably wise otherwise I'll spend my life cleaning up teabag spills etc off the bin! Thank you

motleymop · 27/12/2020 18:58

Packets of plasters
More roasting tins and baking trays
Phone chargers including one for the car (if you have a car, obvs)

mathanxiety · 27/12/2020 19:00

A honing steel for kitchen knives.
Ikea scrubbing brush.
Danish sauce and gravy whisk, the one with the head at an angle.
Also a Danish dough whisk.
Thin, flexible plastic cutting 'boards' in different sizes - I use one under my cat's bowls and it goes in the dishwasher once a week. The rest are also really handy.

@Bloodybridget
Fold over the open end of the bag a few times and use more than one peg. For things that need to be kept airtight, use a ziplock bag.

I got a Beldrsy stick vacuum from Asda for £21. I have a chronic illness and hoovering totally knackers me, I thought it would be easy to scoot around with it to pick up dog hair and then have a proper vacuum once a week with my Hetty hoover.
Hetty has been retired, it's amazing! It also turns into a hand held so I do the stairs with it like that.

thenettyprofessor · 27/12/2020 19:27

Beeswax wraps they are a great way to reduce single use plastic and mine have lasted ages, my kids school insist on packed lunch so they really have reduced my waste

Randomrebel · 27/12/2020 19:44

@BearandaSpare please could link to both of your draw inserts as it sounds like what I am after and include a photo?

I have umpteen pairs of tweezers dotted upstairs and downstairs as teen DD nicks them. Two neutral chubby sticks one in my handbag and one in my make up bag upstairs.

I have a box for birthday cards which I won and have had for years. I always by some cards with nice pictures so I always have a card and stamps (in the box). I also have a bowl in the hall for DH’s work pass, car keys etc as he was always loosing them and getting stressed.

I am going to have to join the gang and get a rubber brush and plastic things for the fridge.

Plainandsimple · 27/12/2020 19:54

@Cocolapew which Beldray have you got? I’ve been longing for a cordless vacuum for ages but the price of the pet hair ones has put me off!

fastandthecurious · 27/12/2020 19:56

Haven't RTFT so dunno if this has been mentioned yet but you can buy the rechargeable usb lighter for like £10 on Amazon for candles and stuff and they're long so they reach down the bottom of the candle when it's nearly finished

I've found my people! I too have been making a list of useful items (inspired by staying with DM for lockdown)

  • elastic bungee cords with hooks - use for securing covers to outdoor furniture, holding doors open, strapping ironing board to a cupboard door, stopping stacked up things falling over in the garage, keeping bundles of things together... The list is endless Smile
  • magnetic curtain ties - clip back floor length curtains by French patio doors which always get in the way.
  • Shoe bags for storing shoes in wardrobe drawers
  • silica gel sachets for putting in drawers, bags and boxes to prevent damp (e.g shoe bags)
  • decent shoe cleaning kit
  • rubbing alcohol - used to clean lots of things and can kill mealy bug houseplant infestation!
  • shoe bags for wellys and walking boots

Looking forward to seeing what else people suggest!

Cocolapew · 27/12/2020 20:16

Its this one @Plainandsimple, it needs emptied after each go but the suction on it is really good, I was so surprised.

Plainandsimple · 27/12/2020 20:21

Thanks @Cocolapew that’s going on my list! Smile

everydaysablessing · 27/12/2020 20:32

Thanks for the tips, I have added to my Amazon list.

I'll add pre cut grease proof paper for my sandwich and loaf tins, makes baking quicker

Toast rack to air dry silicone bags and reusable snack packs.

We need ideas for welly storage in car after a walk, or does a simple plastic box do the trick?

StopMakingATitOfUrselfNPissOff · 27/12/2020 20:36

Magnetic pen pot. Sticks on the side of the fridge out of reach of small people. Actually means I can put my hand on a pen when I need one because they have an actual home

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 27/12/2020 20:46

Magnetic pen pot

Yes - I bought one in Flying Tiger for chalk (I have a blackboard painted next to the fridge)

CarpeVitam · 27/12/2020 21:16

Could the pop's who recommended the Joseph Joseph Curley storage please add a link?

Many thanks ☺️

CarpeVitam · 27/12/2020 21:17

PP's (not pop's) 🙄

MaudHatter · 27/12/2020 21:34

A scissor block - like a knife block but for scissors and a really good pair of scissors . Fiskars are good .
And for drying clothes outside when the weather improves. A branbantia peg bag and minky pegs .

RupertRupertTheBear · 27/12/2020 21:36

Thanks @sleepismysuperpower1, that looks exactly what I need.

Titsywoo · 27/12/2020 21:46

Magnetic clips for sticking paperwork onto the fridge (helps me remember stuff if it is in my face all the time and I often look in the fridge!)

Abelard40 · 27/12/2020 21:52

May have already been said but one of those things you put in the bottom of the oven to catch all the fat and crap so you just take it out and wipe it down rather than cry at the state of the oven every 6 months

PickledWilly · 27/12/2020 21:58

Welly storage for the car - we have just bought a Nissan trunk liner for our car. Fits perfectly and no more muddy carpets

Purplethrow · 27/12/2020 21:59

@MutteringDarkly a rubber broom has changed my life, dd and I both have long hair and the amount it gets out of the carpet is astonishing, even after hoovering.

PickledWilly · 27/12/2020 22:03

We put these wall mounted toilet brushes in all of our toilets, for some reason they make me very happy! Amazon

Can anyone recommend decent baking/roasting tins ? I bought some a couple of weeks ago and the non stick had scraped off already. I’m fed up with trying to chisel food off and leaving half of it behind.
