A Nice Screw Top Red Wine

Smokeahontas · 26/12/2020 23:23

I’m not a huge drinker but I do enjoy red wine. After a shitty year, I’m going to treat myself to a cheeseboard and bottle of red on NYE. Just one proviso - as I’m on my own and unlikely to tank a bottle in one night, screw top is preferable. Budget up to £25 & suggestions that go with a varied cheeseboard please Smile

Chapel down used to do a good one

Waitrose do one called triads at just £9

If you want to spend more an Amerone is between £20-25 and very drinkable Italian wine

It’s all down to taste though

Some people like sweet or dry

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 26/12/2020 23:27

I like Jam Shed. It's only about £7.

Onedropbeat · 26/12/2020 23:27

If I was having a cheeseboard I would probably buy he best cote du Rhône I could afford and it would be delicious

Yellow Tail - Jammy Red Roo. Around £7 or £8 in Tesco.

BathroomWork · 26/12/2020 23:43

I am totally into Dark Horse Cabernet Sauvignon. It's absolutely the best.

Sold in tesco and waitrose but should be sold elsewhere, just haven't always seen it.

Yutes · 26/12/2020 23:45

Apothic red. It’s a Californian wine, I think. About £9. Easy to drink

SimplyRadishing · 26/12/2020 23:46

Dark horse is v nice.

Toro loco reserva from Aldi is okay too.

winefortea · 26/12/2020 23:49

What kind of red do you like? Full bodied/light?

ApocalypseNow · 26/12/2020 23:53

Another for Apothic! It’s the favourite red in our house.

TheGremlinsAreComing · 26/12/2020 23:55

Apothic red is a lovely drinkable wine. Or if you like something sweeter Barefoot Jammy red is easy to drink and has a lovely plum/dark fruit flavour.

astoldbyginger · 26/12/2020 23:58

19 Crimes for £9 in Asda. 19 Crimes The Uprising is also nice. Its aged in rum barrels and has a lovely taste.

Smokeahontas · 26/12/2020 23:58

Just googling all these now!

@winefortea The only type I wouldn’t be a huge fan of would be a malbec.

I like The Black Stump and Full Fifteen, they're very nice especially FF, and they're both screw top.

Beck30 · 27/12/2020 00:06

Waitrose do one called Wirra Wirra Church Block (Australian Shiraz / Merlot blend) although potentially a bit ‘bold’ for some of the more subtle cheeses. Haven’t had it this year though so can’t be sure.

Beck30 · 27/12/2020 00:07

Sorry just noticed it has Cab Sav in the blend too.

Boysarebackintown · 27/12/2020 00:10

The black stump here too.

TreaterAnita · 27/12/2020 00:15

@MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously

I like Jam Shed. It's only about £7.
I was going to suggest this too. It’s delicious, not sweet but very fruity and keeps really well. If you want to blow the budget a bit more, you can get a lovely NZ Pinot Noir for
movingonup20 · 27/12/2020 00:18

Cotes des Rhône villages from Aldi works great with cheese as does the Bordeaux superior from Lidl, neither are screw top but at under £6 just put the cork in and if you don't drink that weekend use in cooking

StillMedusa · 27/12/2020 00:46

Hardys Stamp merlot.. £5 a bottle in Morrison or Asda and I love it! (It appears to be very popular too!) I drink more of it than is good for me...

Yutes · 02/01/2021 13:07

@Smokeahontas waves Just being a nosy buggar and wondering what you settled on?

Hope you enjoyed whatever you had Grin

mbosnz · 02/01/2021 14:29

Roaring Meg Pinot Noir is lovely - available from the Majestic.
