Does the strong wind frighten you?

I'm worried the big oak might crash down into the garden, or the roof might rip off. Doesn't help that I sleep in the loft extension, it sounds more dramatic up here. It's going to be a long night Sad

OP posts:
Youngatheart00 · 26/12/2020 22:44

Yes I get a bit scared when I can hear it properly howling at night!!!

gluteustothemaximus · 26/12/2020 22:46

Yes. I hate it. Scared far more than the kids are.

SilentlyLaughing · 26/12/2020 22:47

Yes. It’s so strong here that I can feel my bed shaking. How? It’s a solid detached house, nice and warm with no draughty areas so why are my floorboards moving in strong wind?

Next doors bin lid is banging so it’s going to be a sleepless night! But yes, I also worry the roof will rip off. No doubt a couple of fence panels will go. I hope the oak stays up OP.

HilaryBriss · 26/12/2020 22:47

Scares me to death as well, i have visions of next doors chimney falling down, crashing through my roof/ceiling and killing me in my bed.

Next doors chimney because although we are attached, my house is more modern and I haven't got one.

BillLius · 26/12/2020 22:47

It does. I have started a thread about it in AMA.

ForkHandlesplease · 26/12/2020 22:47

I absolutely love it. But I'm not anywhere that it could cause much damage.

hettyhooverdoover · 26/12/2020 22:48

Its bad here too! (SW) I can here it howling.

AnitaHotdog · 26/12/2020 22:49

Strong here in Wales. Never heard anything like it! Hope you do manage to drop off OP, earplugs?

Justgivemewine · 26/12/2020 22:51

Strong wind, no, but fortunately the worst I’d have to worry about would be a few loose roof tiles.

Thunder/lightning on the other hand scares me shitless (have valid reasons for that)

ForestYeti · 26/12/2020 22:52

I love it, love being cosy indoors and hearing it so powerful outside. Storms energise me

littleeggcup · 26/12/2020 22:54

In Wales too and it's awful!! My house is nearly 200 years old Shock hopefully still intact by the morning!!

ExpensivelyDecorated · 26/12/2020 22:56

I hate it, find it really unsettling.

LividLover · 26/12/2020 22:56

Never has done before this week, but I’m in an attic conversion with my baby and the house is sold/to exchange imminently.

I’m convinced the roof will blow off and stop the sale.

I’m known for catastrophising.

WisestIsShe · 26/12/2020 22:56

No I'm from the seaside so used to it from a young age. It's very windy here tonight though and we have some massive trees close by so I suppose that's something to think about.

Callcat · 26/12/2020 22:57

I love it!!! It alters my psyche somehow. Wind and storms. I always sleep really well with the sound of the wind outside.

BogRollBOGOF · 26/12/2020 22:58

Our roof is in poor condition. Not exactly reassuring!

DipSwimSwoosh · 26/12/2020 22:58

Yes I worry for homeless people.

Livpool · 26/12/2020 22:59

My DM is terrified by strong wind - she sleeps downstairs in the hall. She was blown into the road once though.

It doesn't bother me but it is never too bad where I am

Inextremis · 26/12/2020 23:00

I'm another one who loves it - it's exhilarating! Nothing better than lying in a warm cosy bed and listening to the wind howling outside.

TheChippendenSpook · 26/12/2020 23:00

I love listening to it but I also like being at work in weather like this!

I don't like being near trees or other tall things that could come crashing down though.

21833efb · 26/12/2020 23:00

It used to when I lived next to very old, 90ft+ Douglas Fir trees, which the landowner neglected and refused to make safe despite official warnings from the council and tree surgeons, and us offering to pay or contribute towards this. Almost drove me to a full breakdown.

So glad a job relocation means we now live somewhere away from large trees, and high wind is no longer cause for extreme anxiety.

I sympathise OP.

ParkheadParadise · 26/12/2020 23:00

I love being in my bed all warm and cosy listening to the wind blowing outside.

Alice190720 · 26/12/2020 23:01

I love it especially with the rain battering off the window. However, dd is in the front bedroom and it seems to be worse out the front and noises such as bins falling over are keeping her awake, it’s going to be a long night

MeowMeowLikeACow · 26/12/2020 23:01

No, I live in Cumbria. You get used to it.

WorraLiberty · 26/12/2020 23:03

I used to love it when I was young and carefree.

Not so much now I'm a home owner in a semi with fairly old fence panels all round the garden and a dodgy conservatory roof.

I have to do a thorough check before I let the dogs out and worry even then while they're out.
